Default R I P Pumpsie Green

Announced prior to Sox game last nite, Pumpsie Green has passed away at the age of 85. Mr. Green was the 1`st black player for the Red Sox and was a member of the team for 5 years. In a taped interview he said his greatest thrill was his 1`st Sox A B. He got a great ovation from the home crowd and promptly ripped the 3`rd pitch he saw off the monster for a triple. R I P sir, you`ll always have special place in Red Sox lore.

Green was elected by ballot to the first Topps Rookie All Star team and feted in the First Annual Topps Banquet Program, which included a mock up of a 1959 style card for him

Rest in peace, Mr. Green. Thanks, Murph, for the anecdote of Pumpsie's first at-bat in Boston. That's a beaute! --- Brian Powell

Default Pumpsie

Looks a little like Hank Aaron in that 62 photo.
