Default Should these be considered/cataloged as a food issue?

Hi All:

I sent the below to Bob Lemke for his blog, but he tells me he has weaned himself off of the cataloging urge. So I am posting it here in hopes of getting info/feedback/additions to the checklist from all you guys.

I recall as a kid seeing and eventually getting from my local Woolworth's window display a group of large team photos. 12" X 12"

They were in the window, and as I was a confident 8 or 9 year old, I brazenly asked if I could have them when they were done with the display. I was told yes. I waited until they were down and went back for them. I got the run around until my father went in with me and I got them!!

I have seen them over the years and assumed they were just issued by some unknown company. That changed recently when I picked up some of them in an original envelope!! Now I am wondering if they should be classified as a food issue.

It seems they were issued by Kernel -Fresh Nuts which is a division of General Foods!! The envelope I have is from Aug.18, 1955. I do recall my Woolworth's selling loose nuts and candy in the day!

I have 34 different with at least one from each of the 16 teams of the time. I have identified that they were issued with teams from 1954 through 1958 so a possible checklist would be 80 different over 5 years.

HOWEVER, I also have a 1958 Pony League Champs from Miami with the comedian Joe E. Brown in the photo, and a 1958 Little League Champs from Monterey Mexico team photos. I have seen another showing a 1956 Pony League Champ from Joliet, IL.

So far I have identified the below. I have, as mentioned, 34 different and know of 8 others. There are some oddities such as Ralph Branca appears on both the Tigers and Yankees 1954 team photos. Obviously taken at different parts of the season, the 1956 (?) Senators photo has both Oldis and Herzog, but Oldis played on the team 53-55 and Herzog from 56-58, but it appears that the photo was taken in Spring Training thus the appearance of both. Similarly Duren is in the 55 Orioles photo though he did not appear for them in 55. I have also seen a different 55 Reds with a different photo than mine. I assume one is dated wrong due to figuring out the players in the photo.

My current checklist of 42 Different known:

AL;

Yankees 54, 55, 56, 58
Indians 54, 55, 57, 58
Red Sox 54, 58
Senators 56
Tigers 54, 55
Orioles 55, 56, 57
White Sox 55, 56, 57, 58
A's 55

NL:

Braves 58
Giants 54, 55
Phillies 55, 56
Dodgers 54, 55, 56
Cubs 55
Pirates 55, 56, 57, 58
Reds 55, 58, another different photo ID'ed as 1955
Cardinals 55, 56

MISC:

1956 Pony League Joliet , IL.
1958 Pony League Miami, FL
1958 Little League Monterey, Mexico

Any thoughts/additions/corrections/info greatly appreciated. If you have any of these I would like to add them to my collection if you are so inclined to sell or trade them. I do have a few duplicates in the set. Thanks!

Neat item Whitey. I had never seen them before.

I think with Bob's retirement, cataloging at SCD may have come to a halt. I am holding on to my 2011 and 2012 catalogs

Al: Thanks for the reply! I would think others on Net54 would have some of these. But so far no response.

Cool items! Can I see the ones from the Dodgers if you get a chance?

Edit: Cardinals too if possible.

Your wish is my command!! Sorry for the flash!

Cardinals 1955, Dodgers 1954 with no year sign in front, 1955 with Campanella lower right, 1956 with Furillo lower right.

Now lets see others from your guys collections from this set.

And back to my original question, should these be a food issue and have a F- designation?

Are these on cardboard stock, or more like a photo paper stock?

Default Kernel Fresh Nuts Team photos

Hi Gang:

I have been doing more research on these and pick up some new ones at the National

Here is a group from Worthpoint:

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...eam-3865932700

Since my first post I have found that starting in 1960 they increased the size of the photos and I have or have seen the following in the larger size

LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 WORLD CHAMPION 1960 PITTSBURGH PIRATES
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1960 NEW YORK YANKEES
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 LITTLE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1960 LEVITTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1961 NEW YORK YANKEES
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 PONY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1961 HAMTRAMCK, MICHHIGAN
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 JUNIOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1961 OAK PARK, ILLINOIS
LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 PRO CHAMPIONS 1961 GREEN BAY PACKERS

At the National this year I picked up the below photos. As you will see these are not only of Major League teams. Some of MLB teams are different photos from the same year. I have dated them by some of the players shown and when they were on the teams. Some appear to have been taken in Spring Training and another photo issued later in the year. For example the below photos appear to be from 1956 with the Tigers showing 40 or so players which of course would not be the case during the season.

The Cubs I picked up at the National is the first I have seen with the facsimile autographs!

If any of you have any of these please contact me as I would like to add them to the checklist I am working on

Wonder how many kids on the Roswell team were ETs...but aliens or not, the kids could probably beat today's White Sox.

Tim:

If you are talking about the guy in the white suit he is famous actor/comedian Joe E. Brown. You can read about him here:

https://sabr.org/journal/article/joe...e-of-baseball/

In it you will also read he was President of the Pony League. His son replaced Branch Rickey as GM of the Pirates in the mid 50's

Fred, thanks for posting this. I have three NY Yankees photos from this issue and had no idea who was responsible for them. Thanks to you, now I do. The three I have are as follows:

This I'm guessing is from 1955. It similar to an Illustrated Current News photo that is labeled 1955 American League Champions.

Yankees Team Photo 1955 Unknown 12 by 12.jpg

This I'm guessing is from 1956, although at the moment, I'm not sure why.

Yankees Team Photo 1956 Unknown 12 by 12 3.jpg

This I'm guessing is from 1958. It is similar to an unknown photo this is labeled 1958 American League Champions.

Yankees Team Photo 1958 12 by 12 2.jpg

The next two photos are from the Worthpoint link you posted above. Note that my 3 photos do not match either of them.

yankees team photo worthpoint 1.jpg

yankees team photo worthpoint 2.jpg

Lastly, an observation. In around 90% of the NY Yankee team photos which include Whitey Ford that I have , Ford is seated in the first row to the far left, as he is in all 5 of these photos. I guess that was his spot.

Mike:

I have and agree on your dating of the three photos you have. The other two from Worthpoint I also have. The first I have dated to 1957 and the last one with Rizzuto next to Ford I have as 1954.

Now to curl your hair! I also have a LARGE 15 X 13 1/2 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1960 NEW YORK YANKEES as well as one from 1961. I will have to dig them out to show you.

Other of the larger ones I have are:

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

It's truly sad that my 'self-entertainment' times now revolve more around Gregg Jefferies rookie cards than hot babes, but what can you do.

Alas, the thread title is still showing double-G...

Hi Guys:

Here are photos of the even larger Kernel Fresh Nuts team photos.

First a side by side comparison of sizes and then the 1960 World Series teams Pirates and Yankees. As stated in the above post I have others from 1960 and 1961 of various teams and sports. Would love to see others. If anyone has them please post them here.
