Rare 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken graded cards

Fleer used it to mark the Ripken cards to pull out and replace with the black box version. They printed entire 132 sheets of just the Bill Ripken Black Box cards to replace the pulled cards. The Ripken card is on the bottom of the sheet so a maintenance guy run a saw up the stacks of sheets to mark them.

These 2 cards came from Donovan Ryan who was a big name in Ripken errors back in the day. Him along with a fellow Net54 member worked with GAI/Global Authority on grading them properly.

How can you tell that this is actually one of the saw cuts and not just someone taking a saw to the cards on their own?

I am not saying they are fakes, just curious as to how it can actually be determined.

Anything can happen but usually if it comes to putting holes in cards, i dont think people would do that voluntarily....yes if money to be made anything can happen... ..i would think who made the cut will be impossible to know 100% but does that matter

Yes it does matter. I wouldn’t want to pay a premium for a card that someone cut themselves. However, a card that can be proven to be legit I may pay a premium for.

I just don’t know enough about this specific variation to be able to tell the difference just by looking at them.

With these 2 specific cards, they have amazing provenance. The gentleman that runs the billripken.com website posted in this thread saying good luck on the sale. If there was any problem at all he would have pointed it out.

After that you have to study these type of cards. There are some that ended up on the front of Cello and Rack packs. From them you can study the width, depth, and location of the cut to see if it matches the ones on those packs.

Now the other side to be fair. Yes anybody could put a cut into a card. Most of those are easy to spot because of how different the cut looks compared to known real factory cut ones. Because anybody can cut a strip into them it is best to buy from someone with a lot of experience with these type of cards. For the most part because of this they sell normally for around the same price as uncut versions unless you are buying from a trusted seller that knows these type of cards.

we are talking 100 bucks here...no way to know 100% and like the man says, the cut and uncut versions sell for around the same.....i think he gave you enough info to be confident in the purchase but nothing is 100%...PSA can say a signature is real too when buying signed cards, but again nothing is 100%
