Default WTB: 1958 Alifabolaget Pele

Something in the 4-6 range would be ideal. If you have something for sale, please send me a PM with pics and $.

Thank You, Scott

I have one for sale at the Swedish version of Ebay (Tradera). It's not a 4-6, but the price is on the other hand lower 😉.

Sold for 34 833 kr ($4,000 USD). And we're looking at a PSA 1 here! This is probably the highest price ever paid for a poor example.

I think people went nuts over this card after seeing that PSA 7 go for $43,511 USD. But I don't know, man. Is that normal? For a $6 - $7,000 card to shoot up that high so suddenly? And again, we're talking about PWCC here. I wouldn't use any of their sales as comps, but somebody actually did and ended up spending $75,000 USD on a PSA 8!

I've seen a couple big sales on Heritage, for example, of 8s and 9s. I don't really question those (okay, maybe a little) This guy's in the same class as Gretzky, IMO.

Ruth got overtaken by Mays, Montana got overtaken by Brady, now there's arguments over MJ v. LeBron - no one really argues Pele or Gretzky as being the greatest ever in their sport.

Having said that, $4K for a beater 1 is wild! And, like you said, I pretty much ignore PWCC - did you see the bidding on that sale? It was over $10K within like 20 minutes of the auction being listed.

I've been looking for the right one for a few years now, passed on a couple I wish I would have got now. Maybe out of my price range until this craziness stops.

I think Pele is bigger than Gretzky. Soccer is a global sport and Pele is recognized in every part of the world. The same isn't true for Gretzky. I once read this funny article where Gretzky was in China, and the Chinese media thought he was some high-ranking politician! It was quite embarrassing. Anyhow, despite Pele's global popularity, it still doesn't justify the craziness that has been happening with his Alifabolaget card.

I think for a long time Pele was considered the GOAT, but Messi has been posing a huge threat to him for a while now.

Yes, I was referring to the perceived dominance within their give sport. Clearly, Pele has a much larger global following of fans and recognition.

Perhaps this large sale in the EU is a sign of more European collectors getting into the card market, who knows? Or maybe the rising tide of this basketball card madness lately. Either way, nice return for the seller, it would be interesting to see the sale of a nice mid-grade Alifabolaget or Quigol at a trustworthy auction house.

BTW, just my personal opinion, but I don't see Messi matching up to Pele primarily due to his failings in international play. Probably not fair but that stuff matters when talking about aa time greats.

European collectors have definitely been keeping an eye on eBay sales prices. For example, ever since Messi cards got hot, you'll notice that more people from Spain are now participating in the hobby.

the one on Tradera and it is way better than a 1... likely a 3... and now that a PSA 1 is going for more than 5k, i am feeling pretty good...

Default Looking to buy another Alfa

Hi,

I was lucky enough to buy my first Pele Alfa last month and I'm looking to potentially buy another Alfa.

Please let me know if anyone is looking to move theirs.

Thanks,

Adam

How much did you pay for it? What grade?

I bought a SGC 4.5 Alfa. I paid ~20K

I wanted bid on the PSA9 but it was priced out of my range when it hit $200+

Default Pele

This thread makes me wish I had bought more Pele rookies in 2015. I paid $1500 for this unsigned Alifabolaget and $300 for him to sign it. I’ve been adding to my Pele collection lately with some certified autographed cards, but they don’t compare to these signed vintage cards.

I have one of these Alifabolaget cards that I have been looking to get signed for a few years. Haven't seen a signing since he cancelled at Steiner. Any leads on where I might find a signing?

Default Pele

To be honest, I doubt he ever does another autograph signing. 2015 for Steiner was the last private signing that I’m aware of. He’s reclusive, has more money than he could ever spend, and is in poor health, so I would be shocked if he did another signing. I got him through the mail 5 times by sending $100 cash each time, but that was 2014-2017. I tried in 2018 and 2019 using the same method and never got a response. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Good luck in your search for a signed Alifabolaget. I had an extra at one point but sold it in 2018 for $8300, which seemed like a great price at the time. I’ve been offered $100k for the one I kept. I feel like his market still has a lot of room for growth.

Jason

Who the hell knows? A year ago, a “2” was probably a $1500 card. Now it could easily be 10X that or more. People talk about the boom in basketball but soccer has really gone through the roof the last six months.

Hi All!

I've not been too active here in a while, but I started a vintage soccer discord channel with about 100 members. If you want to join in our conversation, there are a lot of good people and I think we have accounted for over 30 Alifa Peles in the group so far.

It definitely isn't limited to only high end cards, though.

Here is the link to join:

Thanks!

A PSA 1 sold for $18,333 on eBay over the weekend. The market seems crazy, but it definitely has room for growth. PSA has graded around 60, so considering how popular Pele is, I could see this trend to continue for quite some time. I plan to hold my signed one for a while.
