Default No luck

ok, when I got to the sale 10 minutes after the starting time there was still a line outside of 25 people. By the time i got in all the good stuff was sold. Only autographed bat remaining was a Dante Bichette (he was big with the Colorado Rockies). even that was priced at $95. There were a few stamped bats with names on the barrel...one was a Louisville Slugger full size souvenir model with Al Kaline stamped in it. I think they wanted $45.

The only HOFer I saw with a real signature remaining was a ball signed by McCovey and they wanted $125; PSA book value is a lot less. I picked up some old LP's, in great shape, but still $5 each, but nothing else.

Beautifully clear. Great idea to post vintage, close up photos of bats in the hands of the players. So, how do they ligninize a bat?

"Lignin is a class of complex organic polymers that form key structural materials in the support tissues of vascular plants and some algae. Lignins are particularly important in the formation of cell walls, especially in wood and bark, because they lend rigidity and do not rot easily."

Not a major league bat but I saw this vintage photo on ebay with an interesting pattern on the bat (photo is cropped).

Default Mail day!

Picked up this very cool Kren Model 105.

I think(?) it falls into that nebulous category of the retail/pro bat, but I am not entirely sure.

Kind of dry, I might give it a coat of lemon oil later.

Acquired this Red Schoendienst fungo bat recently from a former member of the Cards organization. Never had a fungo before!

Not the most valuable, but probably one of the rarest bats I have is my Jim Abbott gamer from when he was a pitcher with the Brewers in 1999, the only year he was forced to hit. I would love to get it signed someday, but he hasn't made a public appearance in years. He did show up in 2018 at Angels spring training and signed multiple days, from what I read, so I sent the bat out on consignment through a collector in AZ hoping he would be back last spring training, but no luck. He only had 21 official at bats in 1999 with 2 hits and 3 RBI's. It's cracked on the handle and shows some use.
Hi Matt- shoot me an email when you get a chance, I may have some Tiger bats you would be interested in, thanks Nick. nunnari19@yahoo.com

Default hello everyone

I enjoy these threads and iíve been wanting to post sooner, I appreciate looking at everyoneís equipment. I would like to share one of my favorites in my collection. Itís a double dash dot, louisville slugger. The side writing is somewhat visible with the naked eye, and looks better with different camera filters. The date returned is 4/27/23. the visible writing is 38 oz Gehr.. Lou... i canít make out the other letters because, the bat was ďcleanedĒ at some point. it is 35-1/4 long and a beautiful dark brown. I hope yíall appreciate the pictures of the bat as much as I do, thanks for your time.

My pickup for the month.

Adding a Zimmerman has been on my want list for a while, but I have never seen the Cyclone model.

Default last years pick up

This one has heavy game use, I only wish I could prove Paul Waner used it. This one is a Zinn Beck Ace of The Diamond Paul Waner Type. Itís 35-3/4 long and weighs 40+oz. It is hand turned and awesome to hold. I have a lot more, and maybe one day I will authenticate them. As yíall can see, iím kind of hoarder.

Had this Andy Tomberlin bat for 20 years and finally figured out how to get it signed.

Is that an Indians gamer? I was told by a former player that their clubhouse guy was doing it for tons of guys on the team. Let's not forget the Albert incident

Itís a sox Bat... interesting thing is that it has a gold x on the knob as opposed to mannyís Silver 24... perhaps to distinguish it from his others?

Supposedly used for BP? maybe. But it's such a great looking bat, I think I'd start to suppose that it also saw some MLB action, if it were mine.

Well. I have no proof that it did not, but that was the story i got. Who knows? Maybe it did see action the day before it broke in bp.

Piazza was known to use Rawlings in BP and Mizuno in games during his time with the Mets.

Default new addition

I don't have it my hands yet, but I can say that it will soon be on its way. This pro-model Lloyd Waner bat really completes my 1927 Pirates set (NL champs, FYI). Despite the fact that almost nobody thinks old Lloyd belongs in the Hall of Fame, I'm very happy to have one of his model bats.

Awesome bat. I had a shot at that one probably 10 years ago. Never did pull the trigger on it.

Default how to start?

Hi. Welcome to this side of the hobby. To my mind, collecting game used or pro model bats, caps, gloves, etc. takes the baseball collector much closer to the actual game.

If I were starting out, I would spend some time searching for bats on old Heritage Auctions, MEARS auctions, Robert Edward Auctions, Hunt Auctions sites.... they all have archives. This should give you a rough picture of what is/was out there and, in the case of very old bats, how often (rarely) they are available. If you have a favorite team, that can help you search. There a number of books, booklets, and a few articles that are useful if you become hooked.

In the mid 80s, we'd go up to Cooperstown every summer. In one of my initial posts here, I discussed my dad and I meeting Larry Fritsch at his museum and actually being around his Doyle card (one on display, one he was reviewing). Now this memory is 35 years old and might have definitely morphed into something else over time. But one of those trips, we bought two wool baseball caps: one was a Washington Senators wool cap, the other was a maroon cap with a gray bill and a G embroidered on it. They sold it to us as "Homestead Grays". When we got home, my dad sort of doubted their veracity. But they were definitely cool.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll check these out over the Thanksgiving weekend.

What a fun site...

Tim,

It all worked out for you, though. You have an awesome Lloyd Waner bat on your website--along with a few other bats that I admire/covet.

If anyone hasn't visited it yet, you should check out Tim's site:
