Default Value of a wrong-back Leaf Paige?

Feel free to move this to post-war, but I wanted the widest possible range of opinions.
I bought this card many years ago when completing my 1948 ('49) Leaf set thinking I would replace it later. Yeah, right. My question is: What percentage of value of a "normal" Leaf Paige in SGC 50 (4) would you place on this card?
I've asked a few people and gotten answers ranging from 20% to 200%. Clearly the answer lies somewhere in between. Does anyone have an opinion?
BTW the glaze over Slaughter's name is some sort of damage to the slab, not the card.

First, great card!

This one is tough. Normally, an error/freak card like this would have serious appeal to a certain type of collector who will pay a premium for the “oddity”. But this is such a major card, that I imagine many buyers would want a non-oddity.

That said, the Whitey Plank - a Piedmont-backed t206 plank devoid of color graded A - is worth many multiples above what a normal “A” would be. So even freaks of major cards can sell for serious premiums.

I don’t think the card goes for anywhere near $200k, but, in an auction, I do think if you get two guys that want an oddity of a legendary card, the value could go high. If you only have one guy, it could be a dud. Thus, the $20k - $200k range is not that nuts

Thanks. I was talking percentages at 20% to 200%, not dollars.

Default Value

I love the front, but the back isn't appealing. I'd be more in the SGC 30 range on this card.

Default My thoughts

Firstly I think Ryan laid it out really well. The Venue to find out would be a high profile auction like an REA or Heritage.
In terms of an estimate - 20% sounds awfully low. If it turns out ot be a dud - I would think 50% minimum. 200% seems like potentially realistic optimism. SO I guess I'm tightening the range a bit 50-200%

Oh man, I totally missed the %. I think if it goes over 100% it could certainly go way over 100%. But I am not sure it gets past 50%. So I agree with the range that Howard set forth. The one thing I am pretty sure of is that this card will not go for 100% / FMV for a normal SGC 4. This card will either go for way more or way less than a normal SGC 4.

Not the same caliber card, but I remember seeing a signed 41 play ball DiMaggio at the national a couple years ago. I would have paid the ask, or close at least, but it had a wrong back. It didn't do anything for me. I would personally put it at about 75% but have no idea what the hobby consensus is or what wrong back collectors would pay

Agreed
It is very hard to tell value with a unique card like this. However, on a percentage I don't know it goes over 100%. Maybe. But if I did the set I might want a regular one. I guess as a type collector it would fit nicely.

Also important to note that the Leaf set is plagued with printing issues, bad cuts, and other production issues. Including mismatched backs. I doubt very much a misprinted Leaf would get much of a premium because the set has so many known condition issues. Love the set but manufacturing controls were really weak.

Hi riggs336

There are three factors which could drive the market value of your 1949 LEAF Paige card to "big $$$$$" that will surprise you.

1st....As you already know, Paige ranks very high as the most scarcest card regarding major BB sets issued in post WWII era.

2nd....Given that, collectors completing their 1949 LEAF set will go to extremes to acquire this Paige (regardless of condition).
So, your Paige having a wrong back is really immaterial in this matter.

3rd....The 1949 LEAF Paige is his true Rookie card (in a Major League uniform), as it was issued in the Summer of 1949.
The 1949 BOWMAN Paige was issued in the Fall of 1949.

I've been offered mega $$$$$ for my Paige. I acquired this card in 1982 in a trade amounting to only $200. I don't really know
what it would grade at. Perhaps, VgEx to Ex (anyhow, I don't care, since I will not sell it).

I have wanted a Leaf Paige for a long time. Great card because it’s from the year both when he made his Major League debut and also when his team, Cleveland, won the World Series.

Thanks for everyone's comments.
I may get some more information soon because there's a SCG 2 copy on eBay right now with a BIN price of $24,456.
