Default Check = Cash??

Why does it seem like so many people think a check is the same as old fashion cash money. Its not!! "We pay cash" and then they try giving you a check. Advertisements i see around town from companies that offer to buy your house for cash. That's not true. At card shows an offer to buy cards with cash ends up with the buyer asking what your venmo or PayPal address is.
If a check was the same as cash I would be able to take your check to the grocery store and use it for my groceries. Anyone else have issues with this??

Anymore it is only the same between friends. I still have a checkbook only because I like to camp in remote areas that prefer checks in their payment boxes.

Almost all businesses here have had NO CHECKS signs for many years.

cash is paper money (or coins) issued and backed by the government.

A check is paper printed by any number of companies on behalf of a person or company that allows you to receive cash at a later date IF there is enough cash in that account.

Venmo, paypal and others are done without actual paper money exchanging hands so no that is not the same as cash.

So no....checks and electronic payments do not equal cash

And no, I do not accept checks, credit cards, venmo, paypal at card shows. Only the paper money.

Just my opinion.

So how many times have card buyers said "I'll pay $250 cash" only to try the venmo or PayPal route when it came time to pay??

That is more of a trackable vs nontrackable payment method without fees or a payment that involves a fee so is not the same as cash.

At shows, I occasionally use PayPal 'friends & family' to purchase cards (after asking the dealer if that form of paying 'cash' is cool).
Technically, it's not cash, but come on, same thing (after confirming the payment went through without issues, of course).

Checks are an entirely different animal.

If you don’t take electronic forms of payment, you are likely losing sales. Cash is king is correct, but counterfeit paper can put you in a hole real quick. Of course I only buy from a select few anyway. I don’t sell at shows, so I could be wrong.

They lie. It's bait-and-switch. It's just that simple.

Funny story from a National years ago. I had a bunch of solid prewar cards i was looking to sell or consign. I approached a certain snively, weasely NY dealer we all know and loathe. He offered a cash price, I said OK, and he pulled out his checkbook. I said WTF are you doing? His reply was classic: "If I spend my buying cash now I won't have it later if I need it to buy something." Need it to buy something later? What are we doing now? Umm, unclear on the concept of 'buying', buddy?

I moved on.
