I've posted about the set on my blog. The checklist can be found here: 1963 Chicago Tribune Autograph Album

I also went ahead and compiled the checklist for the 1980 Sox & Cubs Scrapbook. That will be posted in a couple of days.
I know these are technically post 1980, but these are from the 1984 Chicago Tribune Cubs Scrapbook set. For years I thought I had a complete set of 32, four sheets of 8 cards issued over 4 different days, which was 31 players and a header card. I was always puzzled why they didn't include Steve Trout, who was their second best starting pitcher that year. When I noticed that DaClyde mentioned that the Chicago Tribune Archives were now online, I figured I would try to find out exactly which days these were printed. I found the four sheets that I have which were printed on September 5, September 7, September 13, and September 19, but lo and behold, there was also a four card half sheet printed on October 2, which included Trout and three other Cubs. So now I have to search for those four along with the July 4, 1980 Chicago Tribune page with the Rick Reuschel/Britt Burns Scrapbook photos.

I really like this thread, but haven't seen any items displayed lately so I figured I'd add one. I personally enjoy looking at all of the odd-ball stuff!

By the way, if anyone knows what this picture pertains to I'd like to know. Was thinking it may be something used for a shoe ad since the sneakers definitely look out of place on the field It would also be a possibility for First Federal as well?!?

Al,

On the Bobby Grich piece it looks like they're meant to be cut out; is this the case? Those are all cool items by the way.

Default Tribute sheets

The cards on all 3 could be cut and are standard size, but the Ashburn sheet is actually perforated so the cards could be popped out

The Grich and Ashburn are listed in the SCD Standard Catalog under Topps issues, but not the Rypken

Default Ashburn sheet

Hmm... If they were perforated and meant to be taken off then why would they put the cartoon player w/in the area of the card? Looks better as a poster ad anyway.

My guess would be as it contains the palms and looks like a Florida shot, plus is signed after his Hof induction that this is a freebie from the fantasy camps he used to have in ft. Myers in the mid 80s to early 90s.

Thanks for your thoughts on the Brooksie picture. I believe the photo is likely from at least near the time frame of the picture which is around 1964. Notice the facsimile signature, which is Brooks' style from the 1960's and the picture was likely taken during spring training that year (Miami). I purchased this from 16goldgloves, which is Brooks' companies eBay user ID, a few years ago. Most of the items they put up are recently signed even though some of the pieces are older items. Wish they wouldn't do that, but they do. Personally I like the vintage items unsigned and/or signed during the time frame of the piece.

It's a hard one to place for sure. I was thinking it was a point of sale piece for pf flyers too, but I have never seen brooksie on their material before. You would think they would have used him more if he was. The ads I have seen are just the common ones like in this HA auction.

Good luck on the mystery!

Default Coke caps

How are coke caps judged condition wise ? Are there "unissued" caps out there that were never affixed to a bottle ? "Proofs" that are unbent or crimped ?. If opened, what would be difference from poor to mint or near mint ? Did people collecting them originally have special methods for removing caps with minimal damage ?

I absolutely love these types of "cards" and when you say search, I wonder how successful you are in looking for them vs. being lucky enough to stumble upon someone finally listing them for sale. I have a few assorted and regardless of the team or player, wouldn't hesitate to add others to my collection, especially in set form. I had always looked for the 1980-81 Long Beach Press telegram Dodgers/Angels and knew of them through images and/or catalog listings.

Earlier this year, someone listed some Padre newspaper sets from the 80s and in all the time I have been collecting Steve Garvey, I had never even seen or heard of them and then BAM!, 3 new sets appear that I had never seen since their issue in 1983-86 time frame. It leads me to believe there may be a couple other years issues, but still MIA.

Good Luck in your search!

I've never really been concerned with condition, since I just collect the ones with Hank Aaron. I have seen a few unused caps. I suppose a bottle cap collector would be more concerned with condition than a player collector. I just think they are a just another fun way to get vintage pieces to go along with my Aaron cards. I am always looking for some I don't have. One comes up every now and then - I picked up a Coke 16 ounce cap this morning.

Hey Dave, I think I have asked this, but do you know which version you have ?
SCD reports there are 4 different versions. I think I have them in thick felt, thin felt and silk. I have a 4th pair but can not tell if it is fact different from the others.

Al, I believe mine is silk as it has the backing and feels essentially the same as the 77's. I have one or two of the other types and may have inadvertently sold a couple as well thinking they were all the same textures. I want to get all 4 textures at some point and it appears a supply of these is slowly enetering the market over the past few years. The thinnest one I had came from a roll that had quite a few Dyers on it and which I cut off myself around 1990 or so. It was just the Dyer felt repeated vertically and rolled up although I can't remember if there was a tube in the middle. I've at least seen all 4 types now and they can be differentiated.

Here are my favorite oddball cards which where found on the back of Nabisco Team Flakes cereal boxes in 1969. I like the way these cards look and the player selection is awesome.

[QUOTE=h2oya311;1459771] 1957-59 Baltimore Orioles Team Issue:

Derek,

Can you please send to my attention when you have an opportunity; thanks!
No one wants a team issue photo with the middle name spelled incorrectly...

Regards,

Mark

Default Baltimore and Phillies Broadside

Really like the odd ball stuff and while this is not a card it makes for a nice display piece for an O's and/or Phillies fan...

Mike,

I "think" I've seen them in a SGC holder before, but personally haven't seen them in a PSA holder. Unsure if they grade them or not.

Never understood why some Push-Pulls were in B&W and some in color.
