Good luck finding an inexpensive Jackie autograph these days. Huggins and Scott had two that went off last night. A golf tournament ticket from 1971 went for $1920 with the 20% premium and a multi-signed program with a nice Robinson but not removable without making an irregular cut went for $1680.

Wow...I didn't realize his autograph had climbed that high. I remember when checks were pretty expensive but 3x5's were reasonable and cuts were fairly cheap.

I remember thinking that $100 for a 3X5 was too much money 30 years ago. Besides, there were so many of them--I could just pick one up later.
At the same time, Pie Traynor 3X5s were around $125. They're still under $200! Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 03-12-2021 at 07:02 PM. |

I’m glad I bought my multi-signed Jackie ball several years ago a few months before “42” came out.

Ken Burns did more for the resurgence of Jackie Robinson's memory (and continued hike in memorabilia prices) than anyone else. While this most deserving renaissance of recognition would have undoubtedly happened anyway, there was a lull in the appreciation of Jackie's place in history which lasted quite some time. People needed to be reminded, and Burns was the man for the job.
As previously noted, Robinson 3X5s were pretty common 30 years ago and remained fairly accessible in the decade that followed. It honestly came as a shock when the vast majority of nice 3X5s were swallowed up to the point where finding a choice example can now prove a slight challenge. As Mike mentioned, cuts (and album pages) abounded. Jackie was a wonderful signer. Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; 03-12-2021 at 08:55 PM. |

I picked up a signed 1953 Topps for $4,500 in the summer of 2019. One sold in last November's REA for double that, and I'm not sure that I could replace it today.

Over the last 5-10 years or so, I've been surprised at how low many Jackie signed items went. 1947 team signed baseballs sometimes went as low $2500. I was able to get a Negro League signed baseball by Jackie and some others for under $2000. It was fairly faded, but still... And signed yearbooks from Jackie's high school and Junior College days (1935-1939) sell for way less than I would have assumed.
Edit: On the yearbooks, I see that a 1939 Pasadena Junior High yearbook 2x signed by Jackie recently sold on eBay for $7250. That's arguably still really cheap for an item he signed 8 years before he made the Majors signed twice, and in one case including an inscription, but a big jump from past sales. It looks like a lot of Jackie yearbooks (mostly unsigned) have sold recently and prices have increased across the board on them. https://www.ebay.com/itm/JACKIE-ROBI...p2047675.l2557 Even recently, I think things have been up and down. From a buyer perspective, I'm hoping that things settle so I can afford to add to the collection. As someone who loves the history and thinks it should be better appreciated, the recent bump has been welcome. Last edited by Topnotchsy; 03-20-2021 at 11:21 PM. |
