Unique Steve Garvey items to share?
My additions of late are few and far between, so I thought I would see if anyone has any really cool Steve Garvey items that they are willing to share a scan of? I know Al has that Topps puffy sticker prototype and the 80 tops test coin. I've seen and drooled over those time and time again. Any others? Older cards on top of cellos/racks, memorabilia, rare cards, etc?

At one time I had a prototype San Diego uniform made for Garvey, but never worn. It was from the mid-'80s I believe. It was tan with orange pinstripes, made by Sand Knit I think. They were never used, of course.
I traded it to a dealer in Orange County about 10 years ago. Sorry I don't have a picture. |

This is likely his toughest Topps item. Carew too. Maybe not on Jackson.

This reminded me of a couple of jerseys that sold on ebay many years back. They were advertised as prototypes for a new San Diego Padres design that never made the cut. There were three different listed at the same time. All had no player name on the back, but each had the #6. I couldn't say for sure if the era was ever right, but it would seem too coincidental that #6 was selected if it were not Garvey's time frame with the team. They were made by Rawlings. I won 2 of the 3. If I remember, the coolest design in my opinion was the one I lost. Not sure if they are the real deal or not, but have never seen anything like them since. I know very little about authentic uniforms. Hell, these could even be from some high school team for all I know…
I have not thought about them for years, but broke them out to photograph. Quote:

I purchased it off Ebay a while back because it has Lou Brock on it, but it also has Garvey.

Same story here. Brock is on the box, but so is Garvey, the picture I have is not the best here.

I borrowed the image from Sterling but this was my consignment. It is an 8.5 x 11 premium handed out at Dodger Stadium the night Garvey moved into fourth place on the consecutive games played list. I was at the game. It has Garvey stats and pictures of the top three consecutive games played leaders on the back. I picked up several of them that night and still have one.

Thank you for the replies so far. Please keep them coming if you have anything unique.
David, I have the large display piece, as well as the signed balls to go with the promotion, but I think you beat me out of the large wiffle ball display box. I remember losing out on one on ebay. I do have the individual box fearing Garvey. I also understand there is a wiffle bat/ball combo with cards on them that might feature a Garvey disc among others, but have not seen one before. |

I don't have rarities. Just a thanks to all who posted and reminded me of my favorite player as a kid.

Al, There are a couple variations for those LS cards as well. Some have to do with cropping, others have to do with the location of manufacturing.

Curt--you are correct. I am not aware of any Garvey variants, other than the ones above. But some say made in Taiwan and others the Philippines. There are a bunch of cropping differences on the front of the Hershiser cards (plus a bull dog card variant), and some back color variants as well. There are different Eric Davis cards too. Are you aware of other Garveys ?

Now that I look at them again, I guess the Dodger variant is simply a difference in the coloring. Both were printed in Taiwan. One is darker in both the picture and in the border colors.
For the Padre card, there is a cropping variation, but it relates to the location of production as well. There is also some color variations as well. The Philippines card is more yellow and the signature is all within the yellow part of the background and no belt is seen. The Taiwan version has the bottom loop of the "S" in the signature into the green part of the background and you can see his belt. Last edited by mrmopar; 12-28-2014 at 01:31 PM. |

Even the common stuff is fun to look at now days. Garvey has fallen far from the limelight for the most part, having once been considered a lock for the HOF and was named with the biggest players of him time. I guess he fell a bit short...

I don't have a picture, but my family just put together a puzzle showing lots of packages of snack cakes. One of the boxes was a Hostess box from the 1970s with a picture of a Steve Garvey baseball card on the front.

I agree, by far my favorite Topps Garvey card. And from his MVP year if I'm not mistaken?

OK - this complete set of 12 Steve Garvey Tips boxes is probably a bit tough to come by though certainly not unique, but I want to give a shout out to my teenage self for somehow choking down 12 boxes of raisin bran in one baseball season! And thanks to my mom, who collected with me, and always encouraged me to keep the whole box!
By the way - what's with these two front running kids, switching back and forth with the Yankees and Reds gear? Pick a team! |

Nice. I don't believe I have completed the full box set. I lost out on a complete one at least once before on ebay, although I do have the complete clipped tip set.
Someone also sold on ebay several years back what I vaguely remember to be described as a wax proof type set. I lost out on it, but not sure if it was real or not. Never seen it resurface. Quote:

Hey, Curt! The wax proofs sound interesting. I remember boxes of cereal sometimes being wrapped in printed thin wax paper in the late 60s and early 70s (not sure why they did that with some boxes - distribution to humid markets?) but don't think that was something they still did in the late 70s. Can't think of any other reason why Post would print proofs on wax.

How about this Garvey Gafline? It should look familiar as well. I believe it was you who sold it to me a couple years back. If I am mistaken and it wasn't you, the seller had shared a pic of theirs on their blog and I took a shot in the dark and contacted the blogger to see if they'd sell and they just happened to have two! They were kind enough to sell me their duplicate. To this day I have yet to see another.

I am the culprit.
Someone told me they had similar cards of Aaron and Hunter, but never provided scans and I could never get them to agree to a trade or sale, but would still love to even see them. I have not see a Gafline Garvey offered for sale in a long time, but I would guess they are still out there somewhere... Quote:

1980 Long Beach Press Telegram Garvey/Carew
I do not own this item! The 1980 issue was not cataloged like the 81 issue. I still seek this and even missed one on ebay to another Garvey collector not too long ago. He sold me the rest of the set for what he spent, minus the Garvey, but my heart aches for the Garvey/Carew!! That is probably my top want, aside from those ultra rare and one off goodies like the puffy sticker prototype, test coin and such. I do have the 81 issue though and have never seen another offered. |

Have always enjoyed proof items, since they are fairly unique by nature. Picked this set up at least 20 years ago from 707 Sports Cards at a show. The 1975 Hostess cards were just a simple, nice looking set!

Love the proof set. I have some proof panels from the same issue, at least I believe it is the same year. I'd have to look at them again to be sure.

Garvey
Here's a program from 1985 Padres Spring Training that has that typical Garvey scribble signature above the team photo. It also has a nice flowing Tony Gwynn signature below the photo.
The second scan is of the last page in the program that has an ad with Garvey in it. Last edited by ledsters; 01-04-2015 at 09:26 PM. |

As Cal Ripken Jr. moved up the list of consecutive games played, I decided to make my own cachets (I would drive down to Baltimore and have envelopes postmarked). This is one is from 08/17/89 when he passed Garvey. I would subsequently type my own copy, affix a sticker and have them signed:

I did go back and add ballots from the years he was featured and a 74 for good measure. I'd love to find a real write in ballot that was used in his election to the squad that year, but those would be too easy to fake.

He was a great player and should be in the HOF.
IMO he, like several from his era, are left out due to the steroids inflated offensive stats immediately upon his retirement making his accomplishments seem less. Now, in hind site of the steroid era, we can look back on his statistics and appreciate how great he was. I hope the veteran's committee votes him in one day. |
