Default Old Cardboard Magazine question

Posted By: Hutch

Just recently found this message board after just getting back into card collecting after a long hiatus. Must say that this is a great site, seems like a wealth of information. My pre-war focus for the time being is mainly 1934-36 Diamond Stars although I may venture into other sets in the near future.

I'm curious to get some opinions on Old Cardboard magazine. Is it worth the subscription? Is it considered the best magazine out there for vintage baseball cards? Are there other magazines out there that I should consider as well? Looks like Old Cardboard is a quarterly publication. Do the 3 months in between each issue go by REALLY slow?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Yes. Yes. Not really. YES!

Highly recommended and certainly worth the very reasonable price. Many forum members have written articles for Old Cardboard. Wonderful color photography, scanning, printing, whatever you want to call it.

Great magazine. Also, you might want to pickup Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball cards. They have been reprinted into 1 volume. Check ebay, for sale out there sometimes.

There is a reason they have a link on our front page . Definitely worth the investment and a must have if you are collecting vintage baseball today (especially pre-wwii). Also, make sure you have the latest Krause Baseball SCD (2006)....the big one. Add Lew Lipset's 3 volume encyclopedia and that will give you reading for a year and a great start.....good luck and welcome aboard....

I have BB Hobby Publications dating back to the early '70s.....Trader Speaks, a mag. by
Frank Nagy, SCD, Baseball Cards Mag, VCBC, etc).....and there is no doubt about it......
OLD CARDBOARD is the best and most professionally done publication, ever in this hobby.

And, that is a real tribute to Lyman and Brett Hardeman. They are 1st Class professionals
at producing this publication.

Thanks much guys......Ted Z

P.S....Hal Lewis....check-out my article on the 1949 LEAF BB set in this forthcoming Oct.
issue.

The magazine does unique, in depth analysis of specific card issues, which I would think would make it important to a collector of pre-war cards.

Well, I'M SOLD! Thanks for all the information. I also noticed they have back issues available. Guess I'll have to pick up those as well. That, coupled with the books/encyclopedias recommended above should give me some light reading for a few days at least.

What's funny is that I just noticed that Old Cardboard is published in Austin, TX. Just moved to SoCal from there. Wish I had known of these guys before I left!

Thanks again for a great site,
Mike
