I'm pretty sure they were in-store premiums, to entice kids to buy more National Chicle gum.

I love these cards and own a bunch. Actually, I love all the 1930s premiums.

I'm not aware of any rarities, and have owned a lot of the Fine Pens over the last year or so. Great action shots and multi-player photography. They're pretty readily available because not many people collect them.

I was just talking about this elsewhere today, but I am of the belief that the 1930s premiums are going to become more and more popular, as they're loaded with beautiful photos and tons of stars and HOFers, but have been largely ignored.

Scott,

Just this afternoon I was copy-editing my articles on Fine Pens and Wide Pens, which will appear in the next two issues of Old Cardboard. Hopefully this will answer most or all of your questions about the sets. In the meantime, you can ask me any questions directly.

Tim

PS: Al is right, they were in-store premiums.

That or Mario Lemieux.

I like these premiums as well. It's also nice that most are pretty affordable

I'm looking forward to Tim's article. I hope he's pinpointed the date of issue. I'm convinced that at least the Creamy (Canadian) ones were issued in 1937 or later, not 1936 as commonly reported.

But it can't be earlier than 1937, that's clear-- glad you're looking forward to it-- it's been a lot of fun to research and write.

If you can sue a band for making you want to commit suicide, can I sue Barry Manilow for turning me into a wuss in the 70s?
