That is a cool story, thanks for posting the link. Never even considered someone printing $1s but back then that had to be decent money.

I heard of a guy that did $10s because he said "Nobody looks at a $10 bill".

Last time I checked, Austria is land-locked. Kind of hard to board a ship in a land-locked country.

If this was in 1890, then Austria would’ve been a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which had sea access through what is now Croatia.

The article could have been worded better like "Back in 1890, a 13-year-old boy named Emerich Juettner boarded a ship in what is now known as present day Croatia..." Either way, I'm not sure I buy that or not. Based on the area's geography alone at the time, it would have made much more sense to board a ship in Venice.

I'd stopped reading the article as soon as I'd read that, so I went back and gave it another chance. Wherever he boarded the ship, it's still a cool story.

A person actually could have boarded a ship in Austria, on the Danube River. It flows from Germany, through Austria, and on through Romania, emptying into the Black Sea. The Danube has been navigable since probably before Roman times.
