Default Baseball Stained Glass

Posted By: Max Weder

Carried on as a new thread from the undoctored Cobb thread

The stained glass comment leads me back to an ebay posting a number of years ago. The seller was listing some item, but had some fantastic pictures of stained glass windows with a baseball motif, that he said were taken from Johnny Kling's hotel in Kansas City. Despite my best efforts, he said they were not for sale (why did he post them, I asked?). I saved the pictures, then took them to a local stained glass artisan, who replicated (with his artistic differences) a stained glass window which now graces one of our windows. I don't have the Kling hotel jpgs anymore, as I lost them in a computer crash. If anyone saved the Kling glass photos, I'd love to see them again.

Here's the copy the local artist made. (Sorry about the quality of the photo, but it's hard to take with all the back lighting from outdoors--someday I'll read the manual to my camera and figure out how to take these type of pictures)

My sister is a steel/bronze sculpist, and I once said she should make a sculpture of a baseball player. She looked at me as if saying, "Give me a break." End of conversation.

I went over to the stained glass shop today, and got a print of the Kling window. (This is a scan of the print, so please excuse the quality).

I also at one time had full color scans of the Kling
baseball stained glass window. As I recall the story,
were several panes along the pool hall of the hotel.
I beleive this one was discovered buried underneath
a sidewalk.
I have had many correspondences with the owner
('bevjean' on the old FullCount board.)Anways besides
the window they owned an amazing bronze bust(Cobb?)
and many original letters/contracts of the Chicago Cubs circa
1901-11. I know from writing Doug Allen that although they had
offers, it didn't seem like they had any genuine interest in selling.
I really like the windows, and enjoyed seing the repro
at Max's summer bbq.

Hi Max:

Since I happen to collect Johnny Kling, I printed the scan of the window, and put it in a scrapbook. Here's a copy of the image.
