Default Matty in Santa Clarita

A bit off topic but...
Eddie Frierson is putting on his one man show about Christy Mathewson on April 18th at a church here in the Santa Clarita Valley (California). I saw this show about 15-20 years ago as Eddie was first performing it and it is a must for Matty or baseball fans. I do plan to attend. Admission is free too! You do need to RSVP. The website is below and if you check the show schedule on the left it will tell you all the info. This is a great show. So, if anyone local or anyone in town, let me know...I plan on attending and they are having a baseball themed bbq before hand as well. Maybe a west-coast meet and greet?

Joshua,

I'm interested in going. I called this morning and found out the play is
about 2 hours long (3:00-5:00). There's plenty of availability and a
tailgate party after the play. I'll PM you and maybe we can make a meet.

We had Eddie do his show at the SABR Deadball Committee "Boiling Out" get-together a few years ago in Hot Springs. It is outstanding! Eddie has researched Matty in great detail. The uniforms are accurate, the set is well done, just first class. He has a nice website you can Google. I still get Christmas cards from Eddie and his family. If any of you get the chance to go I would certainly jump at the chance. I think Eddie pitched in college, can't remember if it was Vanderbilt or UCLA?

His website shows a tentative date of July 10 @ Cooperstown with a possible show in Boston sometime. Also possible shows in PA, NY, DC, and Florida on the east coast.

I saw this performance in 2003, and I agree, it is simply outstanding!

Default From what I hear .....

For one that spend over twenty years in show business ... if the show hits my area in the east coast ... I would love to catch it ... free, or not.

It sounds like a winner .....

Just returned home from seeing "Matty." I met Joshua from the board
which was neat as we got to talk a little vintage baseball cards. About
the show. It ran about 2.5 hours and was a real treat for any vintage
baseball fan. Eddie Frierson has perfected portraying Christy Mathewson -
props, uniforms and all. Frierson did a fine job incorporating a number of
famous Mathewson quotes and Mathewson baseball stories as well. The
show was divided into two parts; the first was his playing days. The second
half was mostly devoted to his post playing days. The attached photo was
Matty telling the moving story of his youngest brothers' death. After the
show I spoke to Mr. Frierson who was very down to Earth. He said there will
be more shows later this year with dates being posted on his website. Overall,
it was a great time. I highly recommend all board members to see it if comes to your area!

I'd like to know if the show hits the road and makes it to southern California.

I recommend this show to everyone. I saw it a number of years ago in NYC and it was just great. The part I liked best was the epilogue, where he comes back out after the scripted portion, still in Matty character, and takes questions from the audience.
To you guys who just saw that - does he still do that?

Fred,

When I spoke to Eddie after the show he mentioned two upcoming shows
in the SoCal area; one near the Valencia area and one in Orange County,
one of which will be in June. Keep an eye on his website as he did say
locations and dates will be posted soon.

Richard,

I forgot to mention at the conclusion of the show, Eddie was still on stage
and he took a few questions from the audience. Overall I think there may
have been 100-150 people that attended and his Q/A was very short.
He took maybe three questions.

Erik

I do know that Eddie collects anything and everything related to Matty. I believe he has an extensive card and book collection. His reproduction uniforms are impressive in the show. I think his sister helped make them.
