Default How to Remove a Signed Stargell Rookie from a Screwdown Holder?

A buddy of mine has a signed Willie Stargell rookie that he has kept in a screwdown holder since he had Stargell sign it at a show over 30 years ago.

I told him the first thing he needs to do is get it out of the holder but I told him it has to be done safely.

What have other done in this situation?

Thanks

Hopefully he didn't tighten it too much. I would loosen all four screws and then give the whole thing a bit of a giggle. Hopefully the card will move a little and then you can take it out. As long as the autograph isn't stuck to the top, you should be fine.

I think you'll be fine because of the card stock. If it were more glossy, then you'd have an issue. IMHO, I don't think the autograph will be on the case.

BTW, is he selling it by any chance? haha

As Mike said, I think it will be fine.

Remove all four screws, then turn the case so that the card is facing down before trying to remove the back piece. Then, see if it's stuck to the front piece. If it is, put it in the freezer for an hour or two before seeing if that has helped free it up (it should).

I'm guessing your friend knew to let the signature dry before putting it in the screw down, so all should be well unless he's had it in all kinds of strange temperature fluctuations/humidity over the last 30 years. Even if so, it might be fine.

If the ink has somehow stuck to the front piece, I don't really know of any way of removing it without incurring some issue(s). What do others think? I'm personally more used to buying unsigned cards in these holders for the purpose of getting signed after they've been removed. Haven't encountered a stuck one yet, thankfully.

Thanks for everyone's advice....I went over to my buddy's house earlier today and fortunately it was able to be removed from the screwdown case with no damage to the card & it now resides in a toploader (awaiting shipment to PSA/DNA):

Thought I'd attach an updated photo:

That is probably the nicest signed Stargell rookie I have seen. Most have light signatures. I would definitely be interested if he is selling

Agree. Willie also took the time to sign it neatly, not covering up any portion of the 4 faces. Beautifully signed and perfectly placed!

On a separate note... I have never had an issue removing cards from screw-down holders... many of which were encapsulated for over 25 years. Seems like humidity and glossy cards would pose more of a problem, but have not had issues with either glossy or matte.
