Cangrats Phil, that was a great price too, though the image is slightly light (pretty common for the issue). I only know of 3 that I can confirm to exist. Yours (I believe it's the same one that was in Robert Edwards a little while back), mine and the one in the Richard Wong book. There may be another one or two out there somewhere, but definitely one of the tough HOFers from the set. Also, what is cool is that the photo is a early 1890's image of Young that was recycled by the American Pepsin Co. The image they used itself may predate the image used on the Just So.

-Rhett

Edited to change thae fact that the Young was sold at Robert Edwards Auctions (not Mastro)

Thanks, Rhett. You're exactly right, the Young image is actually the same one that appears on the unique 1890-92 Ryder Studio Cabinet card of Young and must date from that time period, a good 6-8 years before the Cameo Pepsin Pins were issued.

Dan, for some reason it just didn't move me all that much. Not sure if it was the grade, the marks or what.

For some reason the m110's are notorious for having those "cat scratches" it must be a production flaw. I was the under bidder, but it got pricey for me. The crease in the upper right corner wasn't in Cobb, so it didn't bother me. Very nice Chase! Be well

I picked up this Chief Meyers T201 on eBay recently.

I also discovered that the image on the T201 comes from a photograph dated 1909.

I picked up a few Minor League cards and, while I was at it, grabbed a few of Rob Dewolf's cards. Perhaps I'll start a collection of net54 members who used to play in the minors. [linked image]

Or perhaps I'll trade them to Rob for a rare Lefty Grove card or two? Do you happen to have anything I would be interested in, Rob?

Brad - that's an early nominee for post of the year. Mostly for the post itself, but partially because of where it sets the bar for Rob to respond.

I'll bet someone will ask: "Didn't you get a moustache with that nose and glasses?"

I won't ask that because I'm too classy of a guy and Rob seems likable enough. However, someone on this board will sink low enough to ask.

Jim, I agree, I will also not sink that low to make such a crack about those glasses.

However, I do have to ask: Rob, did your wife see you in those glasses before she agreed to marry you?

Jeff - His wife married him BECAUSE of those glasses, not in spite of them. She still makes him put them on from time to time when things get dull.

Keep 'em coming, boys, because if you think there weren't worse barbs flying in the backs of those buses on trips from Wichita to Little Rock, you're sadly mistaken.

By the way, Tim, where are you? There's real browbeating and attacking taking place!

Oh come now - my 80's glasses were at least as attractive. My wife and I have a rule that when looking through old pictures no wardrobe/glasses/hair comments are allowed on any 80s pictures.

I'll relate a funny (I hope) story about those very glasses. In 1988 with El Paso (lower-right card), I was playing center field and a ball was hit straight over my head. There was no warning track (!), and I ran straight into the wall and got knocked out (hit the wall so hard my pinch of Copenhagen was still on the wall the next day). My glasses were mangled pretty bad: not broken, just bent in several different directions. The day after I got released from the hospital, I called a Lencrafters (or some store like it) and got a price of $100 to replace the frames (I thought I was being a good guy not asking for a price on a complete set of glasses).

I called the Brewers minor-league director to tell him how much the new frames would cost, and he replied that the club wasn't liable. I still remember his words: "Under workman's comp, we're required to pay for your medical care, and we'll do that. But you're on your own for the glasses."

So here I was, making $1,400 a month, and the Milwaukee Brewers organization is telling me to pound sand over a $100 set of frames -- which got bent up only because I ran into a freaking wall.

It was as that point that I decided if I ever got to the big leagues, I was going to screw the Brewers somehow.

So maybe that's why those glasses look so brutal.

That's a pathetic story. Seems like the Brewers haven't changed their ways since then.

On another note, I suspect if you had dropped those glasses from an airplane onto a train track between NYC and DC you could pick them up the next day and they'd still be in one piece.

Did Selig own the Brewers then?

Don't we have a few other former minor leaguers in here? Didn't Frank (FKW) play minor league ball?

Peter- Really nice pickup and sharp card. Why suspicious? I think they are still popular and scarce although maybe a little of the luster has worn off since they were first discovered.
