Default This is UNBELIEVABLE!!! Is this normal for an SGC card??

This card is now ruined. I did NOT mail this in with a magic marker mark on the card. Now it has a huge magic marker mark on the card!!! To say I am dumbfounded and without words is a huge understatement!!!

Am I missing something? I don't see any magic marker markings. I see what appears to be a long piece of black plastic stuck inside the holder though. Looks like a piece was shaved off the inner black liner and got left behind? Have you looked at that with a loupe? Am I looking at the right thing?

Whatever it is, it looks like it has some dimensionality to it. It casts a shadow and has light bouncing off of it in different directions. It looks like an object to me, not ink.

Yes, it's detritus in the slab. Send it back and they'll fix it, I'm sure.

That isn’t marker, it’s something inside the slab. You can see on the right side that whatever it is is casting a shadow meaning it’s not marker

I hope you are right. I got the card in hand and it looks like marker. I have tried vibrating the card to get it to move, and it has not budged.

Returning the card to SGC to have the detritus removed is an inconvenience alright, but sometimes mistakes happen. It is a nice looking Mays card though.

It leaves a shadow and is catching light change so it’s not a marker. It’s plastic. Bad quality control.

Agree with all previous comments - it is not marker - poor quality control.

That's what I was going to say. It would have to be extraordinarily thick ink to cast a shadow.

It's just wedged. I agree with others, poor quality control but probably not a mark.

I have to agree with everyone in saying that it doesn't look like marker and looks like a strip of plastic due to the shadows it casts and the way the light is reflected differently in different places. It's possible it's not moving when you tap on it because of the way the holder is sealed. Maybe it's just stuck in place?

No chance that is marker. It is 3d. Send it back so they can remove the plastic strip. Jeff W

I'm in the piece of plastic camp. Also, I'm not familiar with SGC's grading process or criteria, but if it was a marker, wouldn't it probably have happened before grading, and knocked it down to less than a 3?

I don’t think that’s a marker. It doesn’t appear flat. Probably a plastic piece from the apron. A headache, but SGC will probably fix the issue for you after a phone call or two.

Yep, definitely appears to be a piece of plastic. SGC should definitely fix this gratis. Please let us know what they respond with.

In this camp too Bobby, with the cast shadow this really seems to be one of two possibilities. Either a scrap object within the case, or possibly a mark on the outside of the case casting the shadow.

Send for a recasing.

Well it was a just a guess on possibilities as to shadow. In the future, I find goof off is near worthless on permanent marker. Switch to 99% rubbing alcohol. Much better.

Default This is UNBELIEVABLE!!! I can NOT BELIEVE SGC did this to my card!!!!!

On the SGC provided scan, does look a lot more like marker. But also with a shadow…so maybe a marker streak on the inside of the front plastic? Good news is I think your card is okay and it’s really nice.

Hopefully, when the detritus is removed, it won't leave an impression on the card.

LOL, only the company that does by far the worst job at grading uses qualifiers. Even they seem to be getting away from that beyond silly practice.

If OP doesn't want to send it back, he can give it to his new long lost friend James. James will crack it out, remove the detritus, impression or otherwise, and just enjoy having the freaking card.

Thank you Padre!!! It is nice!! I sent them a bunch of Red Man's. I think they look really sharp in the SGC holder. The ones without TABS all got Authentic only...I guess that is how they handle those. I always loved the look of the Red Man's!

Nomination for best thread of 2023, without a doubt. I love this place. I have learned a lot, participated in some great discussions/debates but above all, I have been entertained. Leon where do I send payment?
