Sad news regarding Max Rice (Zach's dad)

I just got a call from Zach Rice, and I'm sorry to report that his dad, Max, has passed away this evening.
If anyone has had the good fortune to meet Max at the National the past few years you are aware of the depth of the loss. Max, despite being confined to a wheelchair with MS, always had an incredible sense of humour of his situation, and many of us found his outlook on life truly inspirational.
Zach has taken care of Max (and vice versa) for many years, and despite still being a teenager shows maturity well beyond his chronological age. The two of them together were a pleasure to be around, and their relationship was the envy of many fathers and sons.
Zach asked me to put a post up here to let everyone know that he's going to be out of the loop for a few days as he deals with arrangements and the arrival of his extended family. He's really an amazing kid, and Max was very proud of him, as are those of us that know him. I think it's a testament to his character that he called me tonite to ask to spread the word that he'll need a few extra days before being able to fulfill his obligations in any pending transactions.

I had the pleasure of meeting and spending a little time with Max at the Chicago and the Cleveland Nationals. He was a wonderful man and will certainly be missed by all of those who spent any time with him. My best wishes go out to Zach and the rest of his family.

I was able to say hi and shake hands with both and this past National and yes really nice guys.

All of our hearts are sunk here and you do have a community of freinds here that really care Zach. You have a bond with your pops that will last forever and we will all pray for you & your family.

This is absolutely devastating news. Max was one of my all-time favorite people. Such a good man. Such a good father. If I can be half the man he was and half the father to my son that he was to his, I will consider my life successful.

This almost makes me not even want to bother going to the National this year.

Max literally made me cry at last year's National by saying some of the nicest and most meaningful things anyone has ever said to me.

ANYTHING you need, Zach, I'm here.

Awful news. I just booked my trip yesterday to the National and was looking forward to seeing Zach and Max for the fifth straight year. Max was a great guy - terrific sense of humor and a proud dad. I had a long chat with him just last year about technology and we both laughed a lot. I'm really sad about this, most of all because Zach's a friend.

Might be a good place to put in a link to the MS Society. They're fighting a terrible disease, one that we can all help to overcome.

My Dad passed when I was 13, I feel your loss. Zach, I truly believe He's in a better place now.

As I sit here with tears streaming down my face I am truly saddened to hear about this. I knew Max from what I think was the first National they attended 3-4 yrs ago. Not sure why but I buddied up with Zach and Max right away. I believe I remember making room for them a few times at our table at breakfast. Hang in there Zach. Our prayers are with you. I have great memories of sitting with Max and Zach at the Net54 Dinner in Cleveland last year looking at and talking cards.
