Default Fingerless Baseball Glove

Posted By: Rhys

What do you guys think of this. The back of the glove (button and cloth label) look MUCH later than the fingerless time period to me and I was not aware D&M was a company when these gloves were used in the 1880's. It also seems a little large to me to be a padless throwing hand glove. I could be wrong, but what do you guys think?

The D&M company was founded in 1881 so it is possible but the patch just doesn't look right on the back of the glove. It doesn't fit the strap and is poorly applied. I seriously doubt the patch is original to the glove.

On the Vintage Glove Forum, there was a good discussion regarding this glove. The consensus was that there were way too many red flags for it to be as advertised.

It lacked the proper padding, and the thumb construction is also wrong. Plus the D&M Patch is sewn over the wrist-strap's piping, which indicates it was added at a later date. Also, the patch appears newer than is acceptable for the age of the glove. It is larger and squarer than the proper small rectangular D & M exemplars.

There's more, if you care to check out this link....

That D&M tag doesn't look like it goes to that glove...the wear to the glove and the tag are not consistent with each other.

Nick, the D&M dog, wasn't used until around 1900. I'm fairly certain that fingerless gloves were no longer in use by then. I'm not even sure if they went by D&M during the production of fingerless gloves. This cover is postmarked from 1884 and I've seen a similar one that had fingerless gloves on it. Maynard wasn't even part of the company name yet.

I collect a lot of D&M items, and there were defiantly issues with the glove, many which I agree with in the above statements. The label may mot even be from 1900-1910, most likely after 1910. It maybe a hand ball issue of some kind because the padding does not seem right

the early label for d&m would just have trade mark on it and not sporting goods. doesn't look right to me
