Default TRIVIA TIME: 50 HR Club

Here's an interesting piece of trivia:

Which player who hit 50 HR in a season, struck out fewer than 50 times that same season?

Yep, not Alonso lol. Not Mantle either, although his 99 SO would be considered low these days for a 50 bomb season.

Amazing year by Mize. Took me a little bit to figure that out before I scrolled down to the rest of the thread.

Joe D. Amazing stat. 361 career HR’s, 369 career strikeouts.

Most guys you’re super impressed if you noticed they had more walks then strikeouts, or it’s just somewhere in the same ballpark.

Great question! That's quite an accomplishment (and unfathomable in today's game)

I looked up Bonds to see if he was close. Shocking to me that he only hit over 50 once.

I know Ted Kluszewski came close, 49 home runs and I think less than 40 Ks

Here's a pop-up, though I had to double-check - so, I hope I'm right

Who is the only player to have a 50-HR season during which he was traded?

In 1932, Joe Sewell hit 11 home runs and struck out only thrice. Yep, only 3 strikeouts in 503 AB's.

Joe Sewell has one of the more interesting statistical careers I've ever seen.

His best year was probably 1923 when he had 12 strikeouts in 685 plate appearances. He batted .353 with a .456 OBP and actually grabbed 98 walks (unusual for guys who strike out as little as him, as they are mainly looking to make contact at all costs).

Also in 1927 he had 3 stolen bases and 16 caught stealing.

Interesting. Wouldn't having a great eye for the strike zone be consistent with both lots of walks and few Ks?

A lot of low strikeout guys with great eyes would rather put the ball into play, rather then risk getting caught looking for a strikeout.

When you're THAT averse to striking out, you are generally protecting the zone at all costs.

To be clear, not many players (none off the top of my head) was as averse to striking out as Joe Sewell ...but for every Joe Sewell, Ted Williams or Wade Boggs, there's several more Yogi Berra's, Don Mattingly's, Joe Dimaggio's, Ichiro Suzuki's and Tony Gwynn's who are more likely to put the ball in play eventually, then take the walk.

Also, to be clear, Joe Sewell was not exactly a walk machine either. 1923 was definitely one of his better years as far as that's concerned.

I had to check on my man Ted Williams. He never hit 50 HRs in a season but in 1941 he hit 37 HRs against only 27 strikeouts. And he was walked 147 times!!

Very few current players accumulate more walks than strikeouts.

I think Pujols and Soto are two of those very few.

Nellie Fox almost never struck out and almost never walked for his entire career.
I wonder if he could do that in today’s game.
