I suppose the Yankees would top the list since Ruth and Gehrig cards are simply way too expensive. But which team would come in second.

Does best = expensive?
Either way, my vote is the Cubs/White Stockings particularly of 1880s vintage; rather than Yankees/Highlanders of the 1920s.

Definitely Pirates.

I'm a Cubs fan and I agree that there are a lot of great vintage sets for the Cubs and Giants, but the Pirates have the best in my opinion.

Connie Mack's A's are up there too.

The Cardinals have had as many vintage stars as anyone including the Yankees:Hornsby,Comiskey, Frisch, Medwick, Dean, Bresnahan, Huggins, Bottomley, Hafey, Haines, Mize,Pepper Martin, Musial to mention a few.

Joe D.,

You may be onto something there. With Matty and Mcgraw a good argument can be made. Not to mention many others.

Peter -

don't forget

Bresnahan
Dummy Taylor
McGinnnity
Marquard

and others.

They were one of the better teams in the league and had many of the better players.

Honestly, the yankees were crappy until Ruth came along.... and since most every card I collect is pre-Ruth - I don't consider the Yankees (your pick) anywhere near the best of vintage cards.

Has there ever been a set that featured Negro League players and teams?

Tom,

How about the Red Sox?

Your would also get Babe's earliest cards.

It's interesting that both the A's and Giants are in the Bay Area, but at the same time it seems like that there are few vintage collectors here. If I took a wild guess, it seems like there are twice as many vintage collectors on the East Coast.

I have the Negro Leagues Baseball Stars Trading Cards set of 119. I bought it at a show from Lou Dials in the early 1980s for $6. Not vintage but nice to have.
