Default sgc grading question for y'all

Posted By: pete ullman

I recently purchased a T206 which was submitted to sgc for grading and was returned with the label SML.

The other/comments circle is checked off and the reason says "minimum size."

What does this mean...and why won't they grade it if it's not trimmed?

The card is noticibly smaller than most of my t206's top to bottom...miscut?

Sorry I can't include a scan!

Means the card does not meet the minimum size to be holdered. The reason it does not get holdered is that the perception would be that the card is trimmed, given its size, when in fact it is not. I think they normally give a refund on grading in this circumstance.

Pete, this happened me to once---not too bad a percentage given the
200+ cards i've sent in.

sml or small indicates obviously that its small size is atypical for the
206, and given its atypicality cannot be placed securely in the holder.
i do not read it as a miscut or the like---at least not in the case of
the card i submitted.
i wish you had a scan.

all the best,

barry

so should i try to have it holdered as authentic? it's a t206 red portrait cobb that I want to sell and I think holdered...even as authentic...would be worthwhile for my wallet!

Whatcha think?

Thanks to all for your help and advice!

It's on eBay right now. Send your card to PSA and see if it will get a numeric grade from them.

I had a similiar situation with a SML, I sold the card with the tag. It definately was small. It does mean it is authentic.

Anson,

I believe it's the uneven (slightly wavy) left edge that warranted the rejection.

Happened to me as well with a T202 I bought from a board member a while back. It also did not meet the size requirement, but like others said - they refunded my fee.

maybe thats something they should offer as a noted feature without having to send it back...something like "if not holdered due to SML, check box if AUTH is wanted"
i also have a horizontal that is a typical short card which i did not send in for fear of rejection...but i did send in one that was 2 butthairs too big and came back graded 50/4...so i was happy

I could be mistaken about this, but I believe that there is a difference between a card that is too small and a card that has been trimmed. A card that has been trimmed is rejected as having been altered. A card that is too small is not rejected because it's been altered, but because there is no way to holder the card without having it slide around, possibly causing damage to the card, or at least an unsightly appearance.

Again, I could be wrong, but I would interpret the SML designation as the card is authentic and unaltered, but slightly small due to the inconsistencies in factory cuts in those days. In this case, holdering it with an "authentic" designation still wouldn't be possible.

Certainly a phone call to customer service would clear up any confusion, though.

I think that card probably should have been rejected MIS. Miscut.
