Default Hostess Unissued Proofs

Has anyone seen the 79 Hostess proof of Jim Slaton? Or a 77 Hostess Jerry Augustine? I’d love to see what these look like! For that matter, what any of the unissued Hostess proofs look like.

Thanks

Chris

Welcome to the boards. This is probably a great question for the Post-war (1945-1979) forum further down. This one is generally for discussion of Pre-war (1800s-1944).

If anyone has a pic of the 1977 Ed Kranepool unissued proof, I'd love to see it.

Well, I can tell you all I know or remember about them.

A Highschool friend of mine had a neighbor whose father if I remember it right worked at the packing shipping plant in Natick Mass.
One day he called and said his neighbor had some weird Hostess cards, This would be well after they were made, maybe 1979?
I went over, played a bit of whiffleball, looked at the cards, and they were cool. Crazy colors, reversed negatives, a couple numbered over 150. He wanted a McCovey Washington Natl card as trade. Probably the first time outside of card flipping in 5th grade I traded away a card I didn't have a duplicate of.
Being a dumb kid, I immediately traded half of them to the local card shop for another McCovey Washington.....

I'll have to scan the rest and the backs. I forget how many I kept, but it's maybe 10 cards.

They've all got damage like they were roughly cut from a box, or maybe a sheet that was rescued from the trash. Not faded for sure.
Which makes little sense, since I don't think Natick printed the boxes themselves.

Overall some really weird cards, and I've never seen any others.
The local place did sell one a few years later in one of their auctions, Luzinski I think.

Thank you for posting! Those are beauts! Where did you get them?

Also, did Dave Parker have an unissued proof in 77 Hostess? I saw a card number 119 assigned to him?

Yes, there was someone who posted it years ago on the forums but unfortunately the image is now gone https://forums.collectors.com/discus...rd-help-please. The 77 Hostess Parker had a dark background and it was difficult to see him in the photo. I believe someone at Hostess rejected the card for that reason and replaced him with the backup #159 Reuss, which was the purpose for having those backup proofs from 1976 to 1979.

Holy smokes! You're right. Now I'm curious who was the original 1977 Hostess #65 that was replaced by the backup proof #153 Ken Brett.

I think I figured out who was replaced by the backup proof #153 Ken Brett, I found a proof sheet of the 1977 Hostess set including the ten #151-160 proof cards from a Huggins & Scott auction from 2013. It has the unissued Dave Parker on it so I knew that it would include whichever card was replaced by the Ken Brett. At first I figured it was probably a White Sox player but the six on the sheet were all in the issued set. After that I looked at all of the cards for any that didn't look right. I noticed that Ken Reitz was pictured as a Giant but I knew that he got traded back to the Cardinals that year so I checked him out and sure enough he wasn't in the issued set. Apparently Reitz was traded after his card was mocked up so Hostess decided to replace him with the backup Ken Brett since there wasn't a Giant in the ten player backup proof run.

This is interesting I found this. I have a 1977 Hostess panel I have had for
some time I suddenly realized it is a proof panel. I inquired of PSA about
having it reholder and labeled as what it is and they refused.
