Let's try to complete a "virtual" set of 1941 Play Ball cards. Since there are only 72 in this set......
it has the distinction having one of the highest ratios of HOFers/cards of any major BB set....21%

As you all know, it was the last major BB card set issued prior to WWII. But, that did not end the
production of bubble gum trading cards. The Bowman Gum Co. (GUM, Inc.) switched to issuing a
WAR Gum series from 1941 till the end of 1942. The last card in this series depicts the battle of
Stalingrad, that ended Feb 1943 with the defeat of the Germans, at the cost of 1.5 Million lives.

OK, I will start this "set" with my Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio....so, we have 70 more cards to
show....let's see your 1941 Play Ball's.

1941 was such an exciting year for baseball and the World. To imagine this is the last set kids collected for nearly seven years. I don't have one myself... These have terrific artwork and except for the JJax perhaps, a long ways from the prior year's issue, as exhibited by the identical Joe D pose.

Four great HOFers from the Hi# series......

I think we now have included scans of all the 15 HOFers in this set.

I love the Bill Dickey card, it is one of my all-time favorite BB cards.

Absolutely love this set. Great artwork and some great ballplayers in defining images. Got some great nicknames (Gunboat Gumbert, Soupy Campbell) and three Dimaggios! Hard to pick a favorite. The Foxx is awesome. Really like the Keller. For some reason my favorite is Indian Bob Johnson, probably because it reminds me of the E90-1 Rebel Oakes "Out of the Box" image.




One of my backburner projects is to load my '41 Play Ball set to my photo site. It is presently a work in progress. A lot of the cards swiveled in the scanner and need to be re-shot so the album is "all kine hemajang" which is Hawaiian for TARFU. The 1941 Play Ball cards were available in four different colored wax packs which included a large piece of
BLONY bubble gum. The Bowman Gum Co. changed its bubble gum's name to Bowman after WWII.

Missing here is the Yellow version, which is the toughest to find. Perhaps someone out there will provide a
scan of the Yellow wrapper. I can't seem to find mine.

He almost was....as the Yankees offered Hank a contract when he graduated HS in the Bronx in 1929.
He turned it down, because as a 1st baseman, he knew he was just going to be a bench warmer with
the Yankees. Instead he attended NYU for a year. Three years later, after playing ball in the Minors,
he signed with Detroit.

Who knows what his career would have been like as a Yankee ?

Here is the final wrapper in the quartet. This was the hardest for me to track down also. Ted, my set also is in plastic sheets! I love raw cards to hold and look at rather than the slabs.

Everyone remembers Tommy's famous "Strikeout" play in the 4th game of the 1941 World Series......
but, he also had a pretty good season in 1941

BA = .277
HR = 31
Runs = 106
RBI = 85

Tommy's best overall season in terms of numbers was 1948

BA = .308
HR = 25
Runs = 138
RBI = 100

That is a very interesting Gomez you have......I have never seen a Hi# front (Gomez) with a Lo#
back (Moore) ? ?

Slightly O/T, but, as far as I have heard from his contemporaries, nobody ever referred to Morris Arnovich as "Moe". He was always called either "Morrie" or Morris. Arnovich is one of the handful of players whose grave I have paid a visit to. He's buried in the Hebrew Cemetery, Superior, Wisconsin.

I'd always heard of him referred to as "Morrie" as well. I suspect the people designing the cards took a bit of creative license with the nicknames.

Yes, there's no doubt that many vintage issues have stretched creative liberty to a near breaking point. The Play Ball sets are far from exempt in this regard! There are a couple of earlier issues which almost exclusively used improper/imaginary nicknames (and some who misspelled nearly every player's surname!). I'm sure many of you can name the sets, as I can not. It's been so long!
