Default Show us your 1941 Play Ball's....let's do a virtual set

With these six Lo# cards we now have all 72 front images of the 1941 Play Ball set.

I'm not suggesting that we should continue with back scans....but, check-out Joe DiMaggio's bio, his 1936-1940 stats are incredible.

His BAvg = .343 for his first 5 years. And, he averaged approx. 140 RBI's per year.

Hi everybody and a pre-thanks for what I know will be a warm welcome.

I haven't purchased or traded for a card in about twenty years, but I love this forum.

I have a nice collection that I put together between about 1969 and 1988, nothing as cool as a lot of board members here, but a lot of stuff that I'm sure other board members would covet.

Anyway, I've got a complete set of 1941 Playballs that I purchased from Charles Conlon (I think) right after I got married and stopped accumulating. It's in pretty good shape too.

The best part of the story, though, is when I showed it to a colleague of my father, who, like my dad, was an English professor at Loyola University. This friend of my father was almost overcome with emotion upon looking at the set, and then, to my amazement, asked me to quiz him on the narratives on the back of the cards. He was able to orate, almost verbatim, the copy from the backs of most of the cards. This was in 1989!

The power of baseball cards. Both of us, him in his sixties, me in my thirties, were sort of embarrassed and elated at his memory. Red in the face and near tears. A great connecting moment when the old stuffy professor thought I was cool and I thought he was cool.

Yes, a warm "welcome aboard" to you, and thanks for sharing such a great story! You have singlehandedly identified one of the greatest aspects of any pastime--the way that the shared interest between the parties involved instantly bridges any other gap, no matter how great, if even for a split second! The mutual feeling of elation is something that simply can not be conveyed to an outsider!

Brian:

Hey! Not all of us have been floating around the ivory tower, tweeds reeking of stale pipe tobacco. Some of us, probably more than in most professions, are collectors. My best friend, for example, collects spiders. Dead ones. Me, I'm just happy with coins and vintage cards.

You certainly have a warm welcome from me. Your story is the "Stuff"......that this forum is really made of.

Years ago, my neighbor at the Jersey shore, who collected 1941 Play Ball's as a kid, had 100's of them. He helped me
put together 4 complete sets, until I finally was able to upgrade one in really nice condition......the cards that I have
scanned in this thread.

Thanks and don't be shy about posting often.

Papa Bear George Halas always stated Ruth replaced him but I think he was stretching the truth just a little. Although he did play a little outfield for the Yankees the year before Ruth came.

This virtual post introduced me to a set I wasn't familiar with. I appreciate everyone's willingness to "spread the wealth".
