Default Does anyone remember.....

Hi Guys:

Does anyone remember a promotion by a Super Market I believe ( Maybe Acme or Food Fair) who in the early 60's had a promotion where kids could send in their photos and it would be "inserted" in a picture frame hanging in a major leaguer's locker with the player beside it?

I also recall an order sheet showing an example of the picture you get and a list of players for you to check off which player's locker you wanted your photo hanging in.

It could have been Bond Bread too. I can "see" the order sheet in my head, just can't recall where the promotion was from.

If anyone has one of the photos or the order sheet please post it here.

Thanks!

Here is the ad/order form that mikesplace30 talked about.

I believe each market area had a different player in the ad. Yogi Berra in this one. I recall in the Philly area it was Art Mahaffey.

Strange more of these have not shown up over the years, especially with some of the superstars like Aaron being available.

Thanks mikesplace30!

So now that you all have seen this does anyone have others players to post?

Were the ads in magazines or an insert in the local paper?

Default acme ad

The ad with Yogi Berra is printed on newspaper stock. I am not the original owner but i am guessing it came from one of those supplements they used to put in the Sunday paper as the size of the ad is consistent with that and the backside has a story on world jamborees.

Apparently, the ad ran in Boys Life magazine.

More here: https://envisioningtheamericandream....-and-baseball/

The ad itself is great! Love it!

I managed to land the Berra advertisement. The ad appears in the July 1963 issue of Boy's Life. I believe that July is the only month when the ad ran. I asked sellers of the July issue if the ad was present in the magazine. I asked a seller of the complete 1963 Boy's Life run and the ad was not in any issue. A seller from Maine and Oregon said the ad was not in the issue. The magazine I landed was from NJ. Granted it is a small sample but I think the ad only appeared in major markets. Although the sellers claimed that all pages were intact, the ad could have been removed. I have yet to find any other player besides Berra depicted in the ad.

Acme stores were only in the northeast Pennsylvania Connecticut New Jersey NewYork Delaware Maryland. So makes sense ad was found in NJ Boys Life. So either this was a regional "Acme" issue or the same promotion was sold to other supermarket chains. Given the large player participation maybe it was in other markets.
Great thing about threads like this they come back to life down the road.

Could you maybe post bigger pic or scan of the right side, which shows all the players available?

Wow….200 bucks as player compensation. Gerrit Cole made about $65,000 for every out he recorded this season.

Here is another ad from West Coast markets offering similar photos with your favorite player. It lists these markets: Mayfair, El Rancho, McKay-Erickson, Campbell, and Grand American.

Strange none of these photos have turned up.

Interesting. Do you know the name of the magazine the ad appeared in? I like the ACME ad better.

Agreed. One, we don't know how many kids sent their picture in. Two, it is a personal photo, which likely was tacked on a wall. Three, just an easy item for parents to toss along with the baseball cards.

Sorry Dean. I don't know where the ad for the West Coast markets came from. I am still doing research on this stuff. I am still looking for the Mahaffey ad I know I saw and maybe have packed away somewhere.

If anyone wants to acquire the Berra advertisement (July issue), this seller has it (verified).

I recently pick up the ad that Fred shows. On the reverse is "A Few Words From the Chief." The Chief being the Chief Scout Executive and he's writing about the upcoming Boy Scouts' 11th World Jamboree (it was held in August 1963 in Greece). I'm guessing it's from a Boy Scout Magazine.

I'm from the era these ads were from. I never saw any in southeast Iowa. But in the Mayfair ad I did get a kick out of the Green Stamps logo. When I was young, my major chore was pasting the stamps in the booklets to trade in. Mom loved them.

Man, not another one!??! Do you know what magazine this is from?

I did some surfing on the nets and found the other Mantle ad is in the July 1963 issue of Boy's Life. Unfortunately, Boy's Life had an eastern and a western edition. The copy I found in Google Books has the ad with Berra and no indication of what edition it is. The flip side is exactly the same as the flip on the Mantle ad. So buying an issue only gives you a 50% chance of getting the Mantle ad. I did order a western edition (it was mailed to a Texas address and I'm assuming that is considered western). I'll report back whether that is the Mantle or Berra version of the ad.
