Default September Pickups

Didn't see a September thread yet. So I'll start it off. Got this one in the mail yesterday. I've always liked this image, and this card puts me only FIVE cards away from completing my mid-grade 1952 Bowman set. Getting close!

I finally found a 1955 Stan Musial glove box I could afford.

I've been on a little bit of a 52 Topps kick lately.

Edit: a few other randoms that caught my eye from a new shop in town. I try to look for nice Alstons when I'm out because we share a birthday and have the same alma mater. Pretty neat.

That pose always cracks me up - I call it "manager a-hollerin'." It's the manager equivalent of the fake hands-above-head-but-no-ball-in-glove pitcher pose, except it's even more pointless. It's like the photographer said "OK, now I need an 'action shot'...umm...I guess pretend to yell something? Managers yell stuff, right?" I've sometimes thought about building a collection of those cards.

Haha, I literally started a thread here on that very topic a couple years ago. It didn't get much traction, but yes, I also enjoy that pose. Here's the thread from 2019 (funny that I mentioned in that thread I was wanting the 52 Bowman Stengel...it only took me two years to pull the trigger):

Well, there's my checklist for my managers a-hollerin' collection! And the Rogers Hornsby "pull my finger" card to boot.

The image on that 52 Bowman Gil Hodges is mesmerizing!
And IMO, that is Stan the Man’s best-looking card.

Great stuff!

It's interesting to me that the '63 Topps manager cards (I think...) are the only ones that have a team logo where the B&W player picture normally would be. It makes you kind of do a double take...

Thanks, I grew up with Atari and still enjoy it.
Pitfall II is a hard one. I can zip through the first game like nothing, but the sequel is tough. It's a solid game though, and it has a great soundtrack. There's a special sound chip built into the cartridge, so it has music and sounds way better than the standard 2600 game.

I saw this badly miscut 1963 Topps Johnny Blanchard with about 1/16th of a Pete Rose rookie card for $6 on COMC and figured I couldn't pass that up.

Picked this one up for a Reggie Jackson display. I thought this looked better than several 5's I was looking at.

What stadium is that in the background of the 1952 Bowman Musial and Hodges?

This is my third time owning a 73 Clemente. Absolutely love this photo. Previously owned an 8 and a 9 but this is the first centered copy.

I swung and missed on a number of 52 Topps High Numbers on ebay last week, so instead pivoted to some 56 A-list superstars. I guess I'm putting together a low grade 56 set now.

Went to a small, local show today. Only found 2-3 tables with vintage. One was the longtime vintage guru Larry Duehly (SP) out of Houston. The other 2 I didn't know personally. Anyway, I got some big time 1958 set pickups from Larry, which I'll post over in that thread in a bit.

But I did get 5 of the bigger names I needed for the set from him.

I also got a 1957 Topps Mantle for that set. Mantle isn't in great shape as it has a couple of creases (one on the left side, the other up near the top, both visible in the scan). I paid $100 for the Mantle, but I will have to upgrade it later when I get closer to finishing the set.

Anyway, thanks for the look.

That's an awesome Jackie card in great shape. I don't have a Jackie from his playing days in my collection, and I definitely need to get one. Also, nice 57s. I'll have to find them eventually as I just started the set (only about 250 in thus far). Hopefully the ones I find will be as nice as yours. Congrats on the pickups.

Picked up a bucket list 48 Leaf Big Klu for my Reds collection. Very happy about the clarity. I've read a lot on Blowout about these cards being trimmed, but jumped in anyway. Not going to submit for grading anyway.

Jason those '51 Bowmans are beautiful, and I love the display. As a kid I had the reprint set of those, ordered probably from the back of Baseball Cards magazine from Bill Henderson or Kit Young or someone like that. They were fakes (and not good ones, by today's standards) but I loved them anyway.

Love the Minnie cards...good time to buy. That 54 Jackie kills me...last card I need to have complete 54 to 90 including Bowman...just looking for the right card...that um...would suffice...

Losing steam on 52s, slowly adding 53s but not really enjoying it...so decided to re-do 1960 to 1970. Nice to have two of each of those sets, and that is really the sweet spot of what I love most. Picked this up yesterday for the 65 set I started...have always loved the year and the rookies from this set...

That 59 Aaron All Star is a great pick up...tough to find centered like that! I need to upgrade my seriously OC version...

Default Pick-ups

Wow, amazing cards (Goudey Ruth PSA 3, 69 Palmer PSA 9, 73 Clemente PSA 8, Carlton RC, Patrick's HOF Pitt show pickups, 54 JRob PSA 5, etc. etc).

A few upgrades to my sets...

Yep I think all of the 59T All Stars are hard to find centered. I have a few but less than half of them, I may never get them all.

P.S. I can't believe you are still upset about that 54T Jackie I snatched from you haha. BTW it looks good in my collection.

Well, last day of September, and I'm going to bookend this September thread with another 1952 Bowman HOF card I just purchased off ebay. It's still in the mail, but I'll count it as a September pickup.

I really liked the fact that this September thread featured lots of good cards, but in particular had some GREAT Bowman eye candy. The 1951 and 1952 Bowman sets are masterpieces in my opinion

With Nellie Fox here, I am three cards away from this set. And Nellie was my last HOF player to get...so only two commons and a high number away.

I agree, I think those sets are masterpieces though I would also add 1950. I love that one, especially the Jackie!

Wow that's a nice looking Cobb. You should post that one over in the pre-war board so the t206 guys can drool over it. Nice card (and looks like it's a Polar Bear from the flip, which is my favorite t206 back)!
