Default 1941 Playball Wrongback Question

Posted By: James Feagin

I purchased a 1941 Playball wrongback at a card show for $10 last year, thought it would be a nice oddball item. Noticed something this morning, that I can't explain. The front shows Card #46 Sid Hudson of the Washington Senator's which is from the non short-printed series. The back features #51 Dolph Camilli which is the 3rd card in the short-printed series. How can a wrong-back card have the front of a regular print, and the back of a short print???

James

Playball may have been testing the printing by using "scrap" front sheets from the first series. Might make these rarer.

Default 1941 Playball Wrongback Question

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley

I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that the 1941 Playball set was actually produced over a two-year period (1941-42). Those produced in 1941 were only from the low-# set-and every card has a date of 1941 on the copyright line on back. In 1942 the low-# cards were reproduced along with the more difficult high-# set. However, the low-#'s produced in 1942 do not have the date on the copyright line. If this is the case, they were producing all of the cards in 1942, so that would make these wrong backs very possible. I will also note that while wrong-backs of vintage cards are extremely rare, the 1941 Playball set is by far the most common.

I really appreciate the help guys, it clears it up! I'm just glad to have an "oddball" example for my collection. Would a grading company grade a card such as this and how so?

There is also a paper version of some of the players in this set. Everything is identical but on paper stock.
