Default N172 Old Judge Trimmed?

Posted By: Jeff J

How big a deal is it if an Old Judge card appears trimmed?

Is this common or is it the universal no-no like other issues?

Please help.

There is a difference between having a peculiar cut, as many Old Judges do, and actually being trimmed. But if you can't get it holdered except as Authentic, there will still be a discount associated with it.

If you can determine that it was naturally miscut, it is worth more than if it is trimmed.

With OJs there are a few different kinds of "trimmed". As Barry mentioned there is the odd cut or miscut (probably from the factory). Those are fine for the most part. Then there are those that have the ad trimmed off the bottom. Those cards are collected but not really that desireable. An example would be a spotted/dotted tie that recently sold on ebay. There was a huge discount associated with it because the ad was trimmed off. Then there are the cards that are trimmed all around. People still like those cards but I think a lot of hard core collectors keep away from those unless it is a very difficult card to find.

OK, If odd shaped factory timmed they may be OK but what if they are very nicely trimmed (or not) but they are clearly smaller than others? Did this happen at the factory or is there really only on standard acceptable size? How can you tell?

There is no standard size for Old Judges and it appears there were loose cutting standards at the factory. When one of these smaller or irregular cards is submitted for grading, the graders have to make a judgment call. But if an Old Judge has actually been trimmed, then it can only be an altered card.
