Default question about why OJ's receive Authentic grades

Posted By: ali_lapoint

it was my understanding that the old judge cards were hand cut. am i wrong? if so i apologize for this thread but i have always wondered. if these cards were hand cut, what determines a trim?

I believe the cards were machine cut, if not always neatly.

Handcut OJs would receive the Authentic grade, as the OJs were machinecut. Some OJs receive an Authentic grade as they are otherwise altered, ala skinned, restored and rebacked. The OJs were made in large sheets of many cards, and workers weren't cutting off the individual cards by hand. The finished, individual cards were distributed in packs of cigarettes just like the T206s.

Default question about why OJ's receive Authentic grades

N172's are all over the place in size...I'm convinced that most of the cards that receive the "A" grade from SGC and PSA were just cut weird at the factory. Unfortunately that "A" grade doesn't always mean you can buy them at a bargain. Most OJ collectors don't care so much about the cut of the card, but the clarity of the photo and cleanness of the card.

Default question about why OJ's receive Authentic grades

thats very interesting. thank you for posting the link. i ask because i, too, have noticed the n172s coming in a variety of sizes and many differentiations in borders. i figured the reason behind the differences in sizes was because they were hand cut. is it just me or has anyone else noticed a range of sizes in the n172s? its not usually a large range, but i have seen some examples that received numerical grades that had either wavy borders or diagonally cut top and bottom borders. if someone would be so kind, what is the accepted size dimensions of an n172?

Per oldcardboard.com, in inches, the size of cards should be 1-7/16 x 2-1/2

Check out the site, as it has a lot of basic information on most sets, including size of cards, number of cards, etc. I wish they had comprehensive checklsits. Here is the link:
