After I fight Blacksox , I will return to my tent on Hal's front lawn as I too await his initially reaction. This piece is too cool and should bring in nice bank at REA.

Unless Hal counts Postcards as basball cards he's fine.

Believe me, Rob Lifson is no dummy.

He e-mailed me about this postcard months ago.

I tried to buy it outright, but the consignor wanted it auctioned.

I don't consider it a "true" baseball card... but I don't think that diminishes the value of it at all.

Very neat piece of "ephemera"!!

Hal, you dissed the Toteleros Gibson at first too, comparing it to an Upper Deck tribute card as I recall.

OK, Peter, let me see if I can please everyone:

When an item comes up for auction (N167 Welch) that I express interest in... people say I am unwise for letting other people know that I want it because they will just run the bidding up on me.

Yet when I express "disinterest" in an item in order to keep the bidding down... people say I am unwise for "dissing" the card and then buying it later.

When I post scans in response to a thread, some people take umbrage to it and get angry.

If I start my own posts asking for someone's e-mail address, some people mock me and say I am showing off or kissing ass.

I am starting to see why many people just stay the hell away from this board.

Hal,

I agree. Lots of negativity on this board. And I sense just a little sour grapes as well.

Are you saying Hal you have tried to manipulate the price of cards by expressing an opinion you don't genuinely hold? You, the "true collector" everyone loves and adores because for you it isn't about the money? I don't believe it.

Mr. Spaeth's clients have included aai Pharma, Inc.; Advanced Switching Communications; American Tower Corporation; Analog Devices, Inc.; Apria Healthcare Group, Inc.; Avid Technology, Inc.; BASF, A.G.; Blinds-to-Go, Inc.; City of South Bend, Indiana; Dragon Systems, Inc.; Eclipsys Corporation; Honda North America, Inc.; IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.; John Hancock Life Insurance Co.; National Grid U.S.A.; National Life of Vermont; New England Electric System; Newton-Wellesley Hospital; Northern Telecom; Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc.; Open Software Foundation; PictureTel Corporation; PLC Medical Systems, Inc.; Prime Computer, Inc.; Primus Telecommunications Group, Inc.; Schottenstein Stores Corporation; Sepracor, Inc.; Sequoia Systems, Inc.; Sonus Networks; Stratus Computer, Inc.; Thermo Electron Corporation; Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc. and Triton.

I don't suppose any of these wonderful "charities" are in it for the money either, right? They probably never try to manipulate prices or stay ahead of the competition.

Actually Charlie you are not correct. There are lots of hidden agendas mixed in amongst threads containing some great information.

I was amazed reading through the catalog and seeing it. Whoever gets it is buying a really remarkable piece of baseball history.

Greg,

I agree with you but the bitter overtone is starting to drown out the quality posts and board members (IMHO).

Total non sequitur Mr. Lewis and you surely know it, what on earth do my clients have to do with anything? Moreover, I have never claimed money was irrelevant -- YOU have on the other hand, just the other day you proclaimed that "we should never talk about money" or something like that. I was merely expressing GENUINE SURPRISE that you would admit to trying to manipulate auctions by expressing false opinions, because that seemed very inconsistent with the image you project.

What on earth do my opinions have to do with anything?

They can't be right, they can't be wrong... they're just opinions.

Why should anyone care about them? Why should anyone bid or not bid because of them?

To this day, I will absolutely still maintain that the Toleteros Gibson is a "Tribute Card"... since it can't logically be considered anything else.

Doesn't mean it is worthless. Doesn't mean I don't want one. Just means that if it had been issued while he was STILL PLAYING, it would be much more valuable in my opinion.

Same goes for the Gibson postcard.

Not a "real" baseball card, but doesn't mean I don't want it.

"Yet when I express "disinterest" in an item in order to keep the bidding down..."

Hal you are the one who suggested you did, not anyone else.

Anyhow, despite your ridiculous attack on my clients (or was it me) I wish you good luck if you bid on the newly-discovered Gibson.

Hal, I don't think Peter ever suggested you weren't about money -- after all, we all are to some extent (except Jay - but I think we need to fly in a team from Vienna to figure him out). I think all he was trying to say was that although we are all about money outside of this board, we should all at least try to be honest here, whether or not money is involved. There should be some sort of cone of integrity over this board because it centers on things close to our hearts (and I'm not talking about money). I know everyone doesn't play this way but I think, at least for me, I've given a lot of money up to various people here and elsewhere in the form of cards or deep discounts simply to allow people to enjoy what they otherwise could not afford. You know, pay it forward?

Hey now! I'll have no cheap shrinks from Autria looking at me. Get some good ones from Germany that know a little bit about sticking sharp objects into the brain.
