I don’t have a better photo yet but last night I stumbled into an online auction and spotted this San Diego Padres pinback button. I could tell it was a more modern style button, obviously being the Padres, but the fact that it had the ribbon and accoutrements hanging from it really caught my eye, so I was able to snag it.
I’m guessing it may be an early 1969-ish piece? Has anyone ever seen this one before? |

That photo is making me dizzy...
But yes, I would say that Pin is from their first 3-4 years of existence (1969 - early 70s). Nice pickup.

Makes you wonder why almost every team has abandoned anything remotely imaginative in favor of their current boring, corporate and unimaginative logos. I guess that's why we collect the old stuff.

I agree. The old stuff was way cooler. Today’s logos are antiseptic and boring in comparison.

Picked up this really nice Yankees pinback button in an online sale. I thought it may have been older, but it looks like someone wrote 1971 on the back. I thought it was rather odd that the baseball bat was not inside the hat like on so many other Yankee logos. Has anyone ever seen that variation before?

Interesting...do you know what year that is attributed to? I actually just found my pic in the Muchinsky book. The book says that my version (bat next to the hat) is the less common version.

My meager Thursday National pick-ups. Though, was pretty stoked about the STL Browns vendor's badge.
To echo what was articulated on the main board - it was absolutely bananas. That was my 7th National (4th in Cleveland), and I've never seen it like that. The hobby is alive and well. Though, as has been the case for the last decade or so, the memorabilia offerings weren't as robust as I remember them being 20-25 years ago. And as I rarely post anymore - adding my re-worked frames to the thread. Take care, All! |

Unusual 1938 Cincinnati Reds pinback
Here is a recent pinback pickup that I really like.
It is a Cincinnati Reds pinback with a large metal baseball dangler that was originally sold at the 1938 All Star Game at historic Redland Field in Cinci. The metal ball says Made in Japan on one side. Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer became the 1st NL rookie to be the starter in the All Star game. Vander Meer tossed his back-to-back no-hitters less than three weeks earlier. Vandy got the "W" and the NL squad prevailed over the AL in the 1938 AS classic. I have numerous pins with the large metal ball dangler but never paid much attention to them. Upon checking, I found several made in Japan, but some in Germany and the US.

Anyone else a little shocked with how much this pin sold for last night in Hakes?

The Geneva Cubs were a Minor League team of the Cubs from 1977 to 1993, I think that pin is much older than 1977.

The Geneva Cubs have been suggested to me as well but like you I feel that the pinback is older than 1977. That’s why I’m questioning whether or not it’s the Geneva Cubs.

I wonder if there was a specific year or date range when the “poke your eye out” pin was replaced with a safer setup.

Just a rough guess, I believe that style of pin was popular from the late 1800s to about the 1950s or so

No, “poke your eye out” lasted at least until the mid, maybe late, 1960s.

New guy
I just join the Net54baseball forum.
I have been collecting pins for a few years and this is my first time posting about pins on any website. The pictures everyone posts are fantastic. Hoping to post pictures of some of my pins at a future date. I am a Cleveland Indians fan (imagine that 54Tribe a Cleveland fan). Hoping to learn a few things from this forum and maybe contributing a little. |

Picked up an outstanding group of vintage baseball pinback buttons in an online auction and they just arrived today.
Now to research them and see if they belong to any particular sets or if they’re just individual team buttons. |

I know that most of the Cranes potato chip pinback buttons in the 60s had the year on the back, but can anyone tell me which year did not have the year indicated on the back of the pin like in this photo? Was it 1960?

Quite the upgrade for me on this rare 3.5 inch 1962 Giants pin. The new addition is pretty much pristine. Although the back kind of looks like plastic, it is metal.

I’d love to see some other 3 or 3.5” pins with a white back because I don’t ever remember seeing that on any of mine. Awesome pin, Marc! 👍

That's cool to see the department store behind the pin. Thanks for sharing the photo.
These are new arrivals today. Is there an accepted name for the 70's colored background pins. I'm calling them the "Studio Set" in the absence of anything standard. The Jackie Rookie of the Year pin always seems to go for more than I want to pay, but I was happy to add it to my collection at a good price.
