David SmithI HATE to start a thread about another, possibly, fake card but I am doing so because of three reasons:
1) I want to make sure I am correct before contacting the seller
2) I want to make sure I am seeing the tell-tale signs of a fake (reprint) and thus keeping my confidence in my ability to "See" a fake without having to hold it in my hand.
3) Allowing others to see what a fake is and how to tell it is fake.
The card in question is a T206 Mathewson (dark cap) that was jsut listed on eBay. Item number: 290186529096.
I think the card is fake for a couple of reasons.
First, the seller doesn't have any other vintage cards for sale and hasn't for the past month. Nothing in and of itself but peculiar since they know it is a dark cap version.
Second, the card is turned to the side, thus not allowing you to clearly see the color of the printing for his name, city and League. Also, the words seem to go too far across the bottom of the card. I thought on original cards, the "M" in Mathewson started just outside his hip and the "t" in Nat'l was just outside his other hip. On this card, it looks like the "a" in Nat'l is outside his hip.
Finally, on the back, there are no Factory or District numbers or lettering at the bottom. Yes, there is some roughed up paper in that area which might explain why the Fact and Dist are not there BUT that might also be the location where the word REPRINT was.
Again, sorry for another post about possible fake cards but, just wondering what other people thought about this.
