Default George Kell WW2

Why didn't George Kell go into the service during World War II? He was in the right age group. Everyone else pretty much did. Anyone know why? Was he 4F or something?

In 1944, with many established major league players serving in the military in World War II, Kell became the starting third baseman for Philadelphia (he was rejected from the military draft because of a surgically repaired knee).

I knew there had to be a reason. Thanks.

Default Kell sporting good store

probably 30 years ago, walked into their sporting good store, I noticed a couple Mantle store model baseball bats against the wall--bought them, then was asked if I would be interested in anymore in their warehouse--sure I relied--didn't expect a van full--I sure miss those the good ole days!

Before the next inquisition begins, Hall of Fame pitcher Hal Newhouser also has an excuse for not serving during WW2 and instead playing up a play storm in MLB during those war years. He was rebuffed by the military on several occasions because it was determined he had, as his Wikipedia entry describes it, a leaky heart valve.

I knew about Hal Newhouser. Couldn't find out what it was with George Kell, at least, not with a cursory Google search.
