Default Lefty O'Doul TRIVIA quiz

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

What one particular fact do Lefty O'Doul and Joe DiMaggio have in common ?

Well, we know they were both born in San Francisco and Joe DiMaggio had some great years with the
SF Seals when Lefty O'Doul was his Manager. Indeed, Joe credits O'Doul for teaching him how to be a
better hitter.
So, what is it that they have in common ? ?

They were such great friends that DiMaggio invited Lefty along on his honeymoon with Marilyn Monroe.

They were golfing buddies. There's even a story about Mickey Mantle nearly getting whacked by a drive and blaming it on the duo of Dimaggio and O'Doul, who alledgedly were seen chuckling over the incident ... They also both played for the Seals, and were later signed by the Yankees ...

DiMaggio had an "O" to the right of his name and batted righthanded.

O'Doul had an "O" to the left of his name and batted lefthanded.

That's got to be the answer.

So far....not even close to the answer I am looking for.

But, very interesting responses, nevertheless.

HOWARD.....you are right, DiMag was born in Martinez.....just testing on that one and you caught it.

Considering some of the recent inductees, I say O'Doul should be in the HOF. He was the quintessential
"all-field" hitter.

A great interview of his can be found in the THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES.

Carry on........

As I understand it, the question here isn't what do O'Doul and DiMaggio have in common. The question is: among the many things they have in common, which one is Ted thinking of?

It's a fun game, but we need a little truth in advertising here. It's really more of a mindreading contest than a trivia contest.

No mind reading necessary......

HINT....it involves a constant source of discourse that is not really found in any other American sport
to the degree that it is with Base Ball.

Did O'Doul have some kind of long hitting streak in the minor leagues? Joe hit in 61 straight before he joined the Yankees.

I have seen this story in different versions, one with Lefty being Joe's confidant. As the story goes, Joe was recounting his (first?) sexual encounter with MM and said to O'Doul, "It was incredible, Lefty, you should'a been there."

Not that I know of......although, the kind of hitter O'Doul was, I wouldn't be surprised. And, he struck-out
very few times. I think one of his best years at bat he only K'd a mere 16 times.

Incidently, DiMag had a 66-game hitting streak in the PCL. I think this Minor League streak enabled him to
accomplish his 56-game streak in the Majors.

The first thing I did when I got that machine operational (back in '87) was disable the TILT mechanism.

And, the last time I saw Joe DiMag was 1986......so, you have to come up with a better one.

Ted- the difficulty here is we have to try to guess what you are thinking, and that is nearly impossible. It would take dumb luck for someone to come up with the right answer.

There are a lot of very smart and well read guys responding here. It is not going to take "dumb luck" to
answer this trivia. It's not that complicated. I am quite surprised that no one has gotten it yet. I have
provided two hints. One subtle one and one designed to steer your thinking in the right direction.

FRANK B......you are the TRIVIA King for the day.......you will be rewarded with a T206 card.

Lefty O'Doul batted .398 for the Phillies in 1929....he hit a record high 254 hits.

Joe DiMaggio playing for O'Doul's SF Seals batted .398 in 1935.

If you do the math on both of these player's numbers those years, all it took was one more
lousy Hit (or one Walk) and they both would have hit for .400

Every hit counts.

FRANK....email me and we'll figure out what T206 I will send you.....tedzan11@comcast.net

There is no way O'Doul is a HOF'er. Why follow up a bunch of mistake HOF'ers with another? Yes, he hit .349 for his career, but he really only had 3 productive years. For such a great hitter, he only had 540+ RBI's in 11 seasons. Although a few of those was spent as a pitcher, and not a very good one at that, you have to factor them in if you use them as part of his 10 year minimum requirement.
