Default OJ post - we don't get many OJ posts, so....

I collect a lot of stuff related to baseball. I like the N172 cards because they are actual photographs of the players from the early years of baseball. There are a lot of interesting poses and some that are repeated over and over again.

One pose I get a kick out of is the following of Frank Graves. It' like he just passed gas and there's a cloud behind him. I'm sure that it's a result of something odd that occured during the print processing. When I saw the card I figured I had to get it for that reason:

I wish I had a few others like the Hotaling pose where he's grabbing his stomach where he has a belly ache or the dead man pose with the player laying on the ground. There are just so many neat poses in there.

Collecting these is interesting. Sometimes you just have to take what's available. I've been waiting for a few cards to show up for sometime. I've regretably passed on a few in the past only to find myself still waiting for another one to show up. Sometimes we just have to settle for what's available. A few years back I had a few chances to pick up Toad Ramsey. Then I didn't see any for a long while so when one came available I did what I had to get the card. Luckily the person that sold it to me didn't rake me over the coals for the card. The following is what we end up with sometimes. I figure it'll do as a filler until a nicer one comes along (when ever that may be):

I like the 2 player OJs because it'll let you knock off two players at one time. I couldn't imagine trying to collect one card of each player in the N172 offering because sometimes it's just tough to get one pose of any player. I guess the 2 player poses will let you get closer to that goal (if you can find the 2 player cards):

Some people collect them by teams, others by position or stats. There seems to be a seemingly endless way to collect them. How do you collect OJs?

Hey Fred,I love that Graves card, never saw it before. Ive been looking for a Ramsey for awhile too,i had to settle for a trimmed one.I used to collect Pirates cards when i first started but after i couldnt find any new ones i went for cool poses for awhile. If you ever want to trade that Graves feel free to pick a few cards from this scan,I'll even swap the trimmed Ramsey i have in exchange for yours, hey you said you were gonna upgrade sometime anyway

Heres some cool poses, rather than those bland catching a ball on a string or ready to pitch cards that we see so often. Gotta love the necktie on Tyng, the catcher gear on the Jordan and the background on the bottom 3 cards

All the variations. Risky move by Goodwin though it must have paid off. Expensive to print, but with photography in it's early stages and the other cards as drawings. I'd bet these were a extremely popular.

I wonder if all N172s were very sharp, bright and clear in their prime and just faded and yellowed over time.

I've sold many vintage HOF cards for capital, but can't imagine losing these low-grade commons.

Wow John, those are great cards. I have a couple Graves (both different poses). I'd trade the one posted for a few of those cards. I could use Weaver and Tyng, and is that Alvord on Toledo? Ive been looking for that team too. Is that a Detroit Campau? Bennett isn't exactly easy to find either. I suppose I could trade the Ramsey for your trimmed one in a possible deal, but the one I have may be rebacked. I tell you what, lets take this off line as this isn't the BST. I still can't get over that Tyng!

I remember in the past you asked me about a graded Annis I have, here's a scan of it:

Chris, that's such a nice card of Mac. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not outbidding you on that one. You got a pretty good deal on it. The image on that Mac is nice!

Fred, John, Steve, Leon, Chris....great cards all! I love the N172s for the same reasons everyone else here does. Real photographs, all kinds of interesting poses, can be collected many different ways, the friendships and help that comes with meeting others that share the same love, the ability to peer back into baseball history whenever the need arises just by holding one. I'm sure I'll be boring some that have seen these more than once, but I never tire.

Steve, the sepia tone is due to aging. The cards were originally closer to black
and white. Sometimes one sees a well preserved Old Judge or other albumen photo
that has the original colors.

The albumen paper was covered in chicken egg whites (albumen literally means
egg white), so it's hard to imaging them staying in mint condition. The positive
is that, in case of earthquake or other idolating natural disaster, the advanced
collector can survive for numerous days on his Old Judge collection.

Here is my single example from the set, Al Mays of Columbus. I've contemplated trying to collect the team but haven't mustered up the courage to take the plunge yet. We'll see.

Zach, how tough are the Columbus cards? I contemplated putting the Omaha team set together, but after seeing how difficult (impossible?) it will be to complete the set I've decided to just focus on getting a few.

These have been posted before. I know I'll never get any like this again. Collect Detroit, have 18 different. It's been quite awhile since I have seen any for sale though.
Keith, great poses.

Lew Lipset does own a high SGC graded Dailey of Oakland, but the one Bobby posted is the SGC 10 that appeared and was sold on eBay by Terry Knouse. The image has been touched up but the gunk still remains in the corners of the image.

I'm not sure how tough Columbus players are, Dan. Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable people on the set can chime in. I know John wrote me up a nice checklist at one time but I’m struggling to find it.

Edited to add the second part.

I might have only "thought" it was Lew's as it is so nice looking. The one Lew has is in an SGC 86 holder. If it was photo shopped then I am sure Zach knows more than I do on this card.....

Great thread, I don't know where to start. First, I believe Lew's California League card is Jim McDonald - Oakland. Second, yes I do like the Brooklyn minis but it's been awhile since Jay & I unraveled the mystery and I'm not interested in paying the going rate for such a card. I'll leave them to the other hounds who collect Brooklyn or the "type card" collectors. But thanks for posting anyway Leon, certainly a rarity.

It is nice seeing some of the more difficult cards mixed within the thread. Here are some of my favorites.

Wow - this has turned into a regular OJ lovefest!

After having read Nemec's books, seeing the real photos of some of the players brought the 19th century game to life for me. Almost like picking up your local paper today and seeing the people about whom the words were written.

But sometimes it's all about the nicknames!

The only one I own, and still one of my favorite cards. I like showing this one to kids. I explain how this was an action shot for the olden days - they can see how photography has changed from then to now.

And then I ask what's missing. It's fun to watch a kid's face when he (or she) either realizes or I answer that in this "real life action shot" the player is not wearing a glove.

Man I did not want to miss out on this one! I had to wait all day to get home from work, play with the kids, eat dinner, clean up from dinner, play with the kids some more, get the kids ready for bed just so I could join the crowd here. I must say there are some great OJ's shown here. I am in awe of all of you! I will offer here a few of mine. Most of my others are a bit more worn and do not present as well.

Keith I see you are still showing off YOUR Hines. Everytime I see it I start drooling! I figured I would post a couple of mine (the better two).

I also could not help but see that Cincinnati was lacking representation here so since that is my primary focus here you go.

Tom

Old Judges. I only have nine and I bought them all (in one lot) at an auction years ago.

They are: Anson, Ewing, Rusie, Faatz, Klusman, Powell, Strauss, Van Haltren and Williamson.

I absolutely like looking at everybody elses OJs. It's really nice to see people posting them in all conditions. I'm a big stat junky and one of the niches I collect are batting leaders. The player below (Foghorn Tucker) holds the distinction of being the switch hitter having the highest batting average to win a batting title (.372 in 1889 to pace the AA).
