I realize only a few reasonable slots are left, so an update is in order.

Going into today’s contests there are now 36 double digit winners. If you guessed 35, thanks for playing.

When looking at Frank's stats showing the decline in starting innings pitched, I always think of Harvey Haddox of the Pirates who pitched 13 innings (I think) of scoreless no hit ball.....a perfect game to boot... and still lost the game. I hope there is some kind of * about that feat in the record books.

Thanks John for remembering Haddix. This is the one I always remember. Notice both pitchers are ten game winners on July 2nd. The only problem after this game was treating the bedsores in the bullpen.

Frank, quite a game. Did Marichal get the win?
I'll take 74.

Mays' first HR in 1951 was off Spahn I think. If I recall, when asked about it (Mays absolutely crushed it), Spahn said, for the first 60 feet it was a great pitch.

That reminds me of my favorite Mays related quote.

In the 1954 World Series, Game 1, the score was tied 2-2 entering the 8th. Maglie was tiring; he gave up a leadoff walk to Doby followed by an infield single to Rosen. Men on first and second, nobody out. Don Liddle replaced Maglie as Vic Wertz stepped into the box. Wertz crushed the ball 460 feet to centerfield, where Willie Mays made his spectacular running, over the shoulder catch.

Majeski was then sent up as a pinch hitter for Philley, and Giants manager Leo Durocher strolled to the mound, motioning for Marv Grissom to join him and Liddle there. Liddle then handed Grissom the ball, saying, "I got my man...."

The lyrics wouldn't work today, but it's a very catchy tune and captures what must have been the joy of seeing him as a youngster.

He runs the bases like a choo-choo train
Swings around second like an aeroplane
His cap flies off when he passes third
And he heads home like an eagle bird.
Say hey, say who?
Say Willie
Say hey, say who?
Swinging at the plate
Say hey, say who?
Say Willie
That Giants kid is great

49, with 18 more with 9 wins, and 21 more with 8 wins, because there is still time for pitchers to squeeze out a couple more...hey, I gotta get my 68!

Yup.

We’ve gone from 38 to 49 in four weeks since the OP. Those who guessed in the low 50s should be biting their fingernails now as we approach the finish line.

That leaves only toenails for the rest of you.

Bumped for the exciting climax.

No postseason or extra wild card game wins will qualify.

Sunday night the winner will be determined

The current leader is inside the wrapper.

He'll have to come out if he wants to win the prize.

Update: Still at 52 with 2 days remaining. You’ll have to admit this is getting exciting.

carlsonjok is now the leader with one game to go. See Post #70 for the other contenders. I can't wait.

None of today's starting pitchers have 9 wins. I'm not surprised.

The prize, a formidable 10 game winner in NM or better condition, is ready to ship.

With a correct answer of 54 carlsonjok is the winner. He was the fourth entry and the first to guess over fifty. His prize will be mailed today. Hopefully he will share an image with us when he gets his card. Thanks to all the participants, even those who were disqualified for not reading the rules.

Thanks for the contest Frank. I would have guessed somewhere in the 50's, but since you indicated 68 was not going to happen, my hand was forced to guess 68.

In conclusion, Frank is to blame for me not winning his contest.

So, my winnings from this contest arrived today. A very high grade 1956 Topps Herman Wehmeier card.

If you will indulge me a bit, I'd like to relate a story about my experiences here.

I stated accumulating '56 cards as soon as I got back into collecting in 2011. Just a few here and there because I liked the design. I was at a different place in my life back then and never envisioned seriously working on the set. The star cards just were way outside my budget. I was working on the mid to late 1970s sets that fit with my wallet.

On a lark, I entered a group break here hosted by user autocentral. One entry for around $30. I ended winning a 1938 Goudey Jimmy Foxx. If 1956 was way outside my wallet, you can imagine what a pre-war Goudey looked like to me. But, I hit on a idea that I could maybe use Jimmie to help me on that 1956 set that seemed impossible. I ended up doing a trade with user VintageLoz that got me the 1956 Clemente and Jackie Robinson. As it seemed like I fell into building the set, I kept plugging away at it. As my life situation changed, I got within striking distance of finishing and finished in 2018 after getting the Mantle and the checklists at the 2018 National in Cleveland.

Since my 1956 set was essentially started when I was a newbie collector and worked to completion over the span of 8 year, the conditions were all over the place. My star cards are generally VG to VGEX and the commons around VGEX to EX. But, there are plenty of cards well below that range. I've wanted to upgrade for a while, but I have had other priorities.

Which brings us to today. After opening Frank's gift, I pulled out my 1956 binder and went to the right page. Wouldn't you know it, my version of the Wehmeier card was in Fair to Good condition. So, not only did I get to upgrade my set, but I was also reminded of the role members here have played in helping me really get serious about the set and realize I can put sets like this together.

So, thanks all around.

What a great story. The stats on the back of the card verify that Wehmeier was a 10 game winner in 1955.

But I knew this contest was all a ploy for Frank to show off his extensive Herm Wehmeier knowledge.
