Default Cards with qualifiers...deals or not deals?

Posted By: Doug

If two examples of the same card came up for sale with one being a PSA 8 (OC) and the other being a PSA 5 which one would you pick if they were the same price? Personally I'd take the higher grade card at the discount price, but I'm curious how many other people agree with that way of thinking or how many people would rather have the lower grade unqualified card.

I'd rather have an ex card with perfect centering and registration than a badly miscut or stained but otherwise nm-mt card.

Of course, I think the whole qualifier thing is a big crock of crap anyhow...

I'd take the 8OC card all day long. Pack fresh cards make me happy.

I like cards with qualifiers, depending on how much the qualifier takes away from the eye appeal. I have been able to pick up some nice looking cards I could not have otherwise afforded because of a qualifier. I'll take the higher grade card with the qualifier over the lower grade all day long.

And I may be one of the only ones who feel this way, but I think cards with qualifiers are undervalued compared to their counterparts.

is a just a letter. Cross them to SGC and it magically disappears. I buy a card on appearance. Sure I would rather have a perfectly centered card but can be less discriminating depending on the total presentation (color, corners, registration, etc.) and the price.

I'll take the 8OC anytime over a 5. Very few old cards were perfectly centered so it doesn't bother me in the least. I like sharp corners.

Wow, this thread is so old I was going to disagree until I realized I made the original post! Anymore I just buy lower grade (2-5) cards so I really just go by eye appeal. I reserve the right to change my mind every two years...

Default If I had a choice,...

between an 8OC and a 5, I would buy the 7
!!!

no seriously, I wouldn't buy either one...I'd buy the highest non-qualified one I can possibly afford.

This is another reason why I like SGC. Qualifiers seem to be nothing more than a grading "mulligan" to me.
