Default Tabs: Let's see some love for them

I've always thought of them as a cool subset of pins, much rarer due to the easy breakage of the tabs, as those of my age learned as a kid. You could bend them once, but trying to bend them back without breaking was tough. These are my Washington and Washington/Baltimore sets. I'd like to see yours!

A bunch were on eBay recently, maybe every team but at least many of them, and some dupes. That blew me away, because I know how tough they are. I snagged two really nice Washingtons and two Baltimores, which I'm not sure I'd ever seen, either.

The tabs on ebay were from a board member, who, if I recall correctly, has all of the teams other than the Braves. I picked up this Giants tab from him. The Colts tab helps to date the series to the early 1960s. I know that the Giants tab is very rare. Not sure if all teams are as rare or if some are more common than others.

Hank,

Can you post the Baltimore tabs you picked up...or were they the same?

Did you give up on ever putting the whole set together, and how long were you at it? Any of them noticeably more common or more rare, other than the Braves and Twins. I know from collecting and dealing in Washington stuff for several decades just how tough the Nationals tab was, in fact I had seen exactly one other example I would describe as in nice condition until you put yours up, and thank you for that. I love the tabs! One last question: Do you know how they were supposed to work? I was never adept at mechanical reasoning, and I can't figure out what you're supposed to do with the tabs and the slot.

The Giants players were included in packs of Armour hot dogs in 1958.

I also have the Giants team tab bocca posted. He believes it was done by Armour. I'm not so sure...

Well, I don't know anything about the team tabs and Armour products, but both sets of tabs seem to have been manufactured by the same maker. The Giants and team tabs are the same size, shape(s), and material. The team tabs are 5+ years older.

The team tab can’t be any older if the players are from 1958.

The tabs aren't long enough for that, I think it's something else. And on some it look like the sides are meant to be folded in, but on others there's not enough to fold. I really can't figure it out what you're supposed to do with these. I wonder if anyone has the original packaging which might have a diagram.

On the ones with tabs and slots, you would fold the tab over a shirt pocket or through a button hole and then “chain” others below, through the slots.

Wow, would never have imagined that, thanks! How did you know? And what about the ones with tab-like sides, those aren't meant to be folded at all? They sure look like it!

I think you’re right about the same manufacturer but I don’t believe the team tabs came in Armour Hot Dog packages.
