Default Waaayy OT...anyone on here collect ancient coins?

Posted By: Brian McQueen

I rarely post OT, but thought I'd take advantage of "board leniency" just once.

I was looking to find out more about collecting ancient coins as I know nothing about it. I don't suppose any of my card collecting buddies out there would know the best way to start researching this hobby and getting a collection started? I'm primarily interested in learning about Roman/Greek coins from 500 BC - 500 AD as well as American coins from our Nation's beginnings in the late 18th century.

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide,

Brian

Brian, actually in a wild coincidence, I do collect Greek and (mainly) Roman coins. I can tell you a slew of (mainly) academic bibliography and a few websites and better dealers. Shoot me an e-mail...

I see so many "ancient Roman coins" on ebay in lots on 10 or 20 and they hardy sell for any money. I don't know much about them, but why do they sell for such low prices ?

Brett these coins are of the lowest condition. They contain no precious metals, and good luck finding the image on most of them

There are many modern reproductions of ancient coins that are offered for sale as originals. I think that has kept many beginners from collecting them.
