Default ebay sinks to new low

Ebay, in an effort to "protect" its customers, has created a new category. "Beckett SportsCollectibles" recently interviewed Jeff Jordan of ebay and asked him the following question: "What else is eBay doing to combat the movement of counterfeit items, such as bogus autographed memorabilia?"

Part of the amazing JJ's response was "The reality on eBay is fraud is really small...In terms of sports memorabilia, we continue to work on things like graded categories, Authenticator Pre-Certified categories. We work heavily with authenticators, trying to promote authentication. It's a big deal to us, and we want to keep educating users and making the site as safe as it can be in every category".

Eureka! Now, ignorant people can collect vintage sports memorabilia without fear of getting ripped off. All they have to do is shop from this special "safe" category - JJ added the following, which certainly makes me feel safe: "The only items we want in there are items with proof of authenticity from a select group of authenticators". Following is an example of one of those "select group of authenticators" that JJ and his wise buddies are "working heavily with":

There was a small article in Beckett Sports Collectibles on these cut outs that have been graded by NASA and AAA. Someone was asking if they were worth bidding on in auction.
Basically all they could say was they hoped the seller didnt cut them out of a good condition guide but hopefully destroyed something that was on its way to the trash

I feel better about eBay every day. If they actually spent as much time trying to prevent fraud as they do presenting the illusion of safety, they prolly would have as "small" of a fraud problem as they pretend to believe.

A reasonable and simple way for eBay to handle this would to have an exclusive list of allowable graders for the graded categories ... As folks would inevitably try and sneak their 'Mint9 + PSA' cards into the category, I would happily endorse eBay charging the seller an administrative fee for moving such cards to the non-graded category. This would also cover eBays concerns about time and money.

Naturally, eBay would never do anything like this.

On the other hand, a potential bidder could take the time to learn learn the difference between AAA and SGC, NASA and PSA. Apparently, this is too radical an approach for many.

Scott, this just might be the new subtitle feature that ebay is offering for .50 to add more description to the title.
