Default "Vintage Baseball Pins" Real? Or fake?

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Hi all,
I was looking through my pin box yesterday and was wondering how many board members collect them. I was also wondering how many of us have pins we think are "vintage", but are really repo's. Here are a few real "Vinatge" pins and a few repo's. Let's see who can tell the difference, and who has some to post from there own collections. thanks Brian

It's easy enough to make a repro look old, while at the same time there are many originals out there in mint condition.

Good luck with that aspect of collecting.

Hi Scott,
I don't really collect pins, in fact I picked most of these up over 15 years ago, and was just trying to stimulate a discussion. Be well Brian

The Cronin, Yankees and Cardinals are real. Nobody fakes the tin litho pins.

The Ruth is not.

The Williams probably is fake if the back of the pin is bright silver, but there are alot of real ones out there too.

The Mantle and Angels look real at first, but can't say for sure without seeing them in person.

Scott

simple "L.A. Angels" is real, too--it'd be easy enough to copy, but nobody ever seems to bother to copy those. I'd like to see the back of the Mantle.

I only own four pins: the '74 As and '89 As World Series Press Pins and the '55 Brooklyn Doders and 2004 Red Sox World Series Press Pins. But somehow, when you're going to spend a bunch of dough on a hunk of METAL, you do some research.

(I was writing this post while Brian was telling all. I really guessed right all by myself, honest.)

sometimes you have to ask yourself "Would anyone in their right mind forge this item?" I always thought it was crazy that there were so many of the fake pencil clips on ebay, but I guess a $1 per item profit goes a long ways in Appalachia.

If you have a pin with a needle so corroded and repulsive that you tell your wife, "If I accidentally poke myself with this, call 911 right away," the pin is vintage.

If you start foaming at the mouth and have trouble drinking water after handling your pin collection, the pins may or may not be genuine, but you should quit kissing skunks.

I did offer Rhett the Plank plus money (he names it) for his Cameo Pepsen Hoy, he said, naturally No. Who wouldn't?
