Default What year V89 Patterson?

Collector Will Oesterritter forwarded the following thoughts on why the V89 should not be cataloged as a 1922 set, but rather a 1924 issue.

"I believe the Wm Paterson cards are not from 1922, but rather late 1923 or early 1924. I came to this conclusion based on two players from the set. The first is Joe Oeschger. He is listed in 1922 and 1923 as playing for the Boston Braves. He was traded to the Giants in November 1923. His card in the Wm Paterson set has him listed on the Giants. Oeschger only appeared in 10 games with the Giants in 1924 before being selected off waivers by the Phillies. The second is Dave Bancroft. In 1922 and 1923, he was playing for the Giants. He was involved in the trade with Oeschger in Nov. 1923. His Wm Paterson card has him with the Boston Braves. Bancroft was on the Braves from 1924 through 1927."

Is there are any evidence, i.e., players listed on teams they were not on in the 1924 season, that the set year shouldn't be given as 1924?

Based on the inclusion of Travis Jackson, 1922 is really not a possibility nor is 1923 very likely, more probable that 1924 was the real issue date. The issue date is also key because this is Jackson's rookie card as well.

The company also issued a hockey set in 1924 and, being a Canadian company, you would think that hockey would at least take equal priority to baseball, if not more. Doubtful that they would issue a baseball set and then follow it with a hockey set two years later.

Default Pennock In V89 on New York Yankees

Pennock was with the NYY in 1923 and is on the Yankees on the Paterson card....He was with Boston in 1922. One thing to keep in mind though pertains to when the cards were distributed versus made. If the cards were made in 1922 and then distributed in 1923 this example and the ones above could be explained, as when they were made the players were on their respective teams. One would think that making and distributing cards back in the early 20's could have entailed some challenges and there could potentially be time elapsed between manufacture date and distribution. Not sure if this makes sense or is feasible but it's something to at least consider. regards

I looked into this once and noticed that there were 2 or 3 players who retired in 1921 or 1922 who made it into the set. I can't remember off hand who they were. But with the evidence Bob mentions, it's impossible for the set to have been issued in 1922. So I think we have to write off these 2 or 3 players as oddities, like the M101-5 Chance showing him with Chicago, where he hadn't been since about 1912.

Paul,

I went through some of the players in the set and two (Grainor and Milan) retired in 1922 and Rube Marquard who was listed with Brooklyn, actually was on the Boston Braves in 1922-1924.
