Default I forgot about this one!

Nice addition Doc! I can't recall if I've seen it or not.

So almost everyone is familiar with the 1972 Daily Juice Fan club card - probably the most common inexpensive card from Roberto's playing days!

Less people are familiar with the Harmony Dairy variation - same front photo and different back printing and much tougher to find

Well, feast your eyes on this! The only one I have ever seen - mislabeled by PSA as Daily Juice in fact it is "N.Y. Friends of Roberto Clemente"

about 2 1/2 x 3 7/8 it is likely an unfinished/proof fan club card.

Think this is cool. Looks like the common card, but it's a different backing. Love it Howard...

[QUOTE=docpatlv;1803689]Day 227

I have no idea where this next item was distributed, but I believe it is definitely period from 1973. It is on heavy paper stock and measures roughly 9 x 12.

1973 Memorial Sheet...

Mike, I picked up one of these from the Clemente Family Collection during the National. I recently came across a seller who was disassembling a scrapbook originating from Puerto Rico. I purchased the spanish version from him. The lot included newspaper clippings which served to illuminate this items origin. Apparently they were given out to attendees of the public memorial at Hiram Bithorn Stadium for Clemente and the others who lost thier lives on that mission of mercy. The Arch Bishop of San Juan said that Clemente was destined to die on a mission of love and that the life of Clemente had become a bonfire for Puerto Ricans. He claimed the ocean is the best grave for such a beloved universal figure.

Default Awesome story Mike!

I have the English version. I've not seen the Spanish version before. Super cool and even cooler to know the origin! Thanks for sharing

Mike,

That Spanish version is great! Like Howard, another I’ve never seen before. It’s great that there are items we’ve never seen before still popping up in this thread.

Was it from SS collectors?

Here’s a difficult item to find. Sometimes patience pays off. Was considering purchasing this at a recent Philly show but felt the price was too high. Found this on eBay for $150 less

1973 Pittsburgh Pirates season tickets brochure...

Nice photo used on the front of the ticket plan brochure. So, can I assume it was more than $150?!? Man, even paper items with Clemente are steep...

Mark,

His stuff has always been a little pricey, and it’s probably mostly the same people I end up bidding against. But compared to the other two players I like to focus on, Cobb and Wagner, his stuff is relatively cheap

I’m trying to just keep collecting items from his playing days that I like.

BTW, your Brooks thread has been great, keep it up!

I guess it’s all relative. Both of their items I’m sure are expensive no matter what type of items you collect. Looks like Clemente keeps escalating so maybe someday he’ll be in the same realm.

Default Great Thread

Check in on this thread about once a week, always interesting pieces to see and appreciate. For me my only Clemente item, so far, is this Roberto autograph from his minor league stay in Montreal in 1954. By the next season the Pirates had pried him away from the Dodgers and the rest they say is history. Keep em coming guys, great stuff.

Yes sir, just the last name. What I`ve heard Clemente was an very unlikely signer especially this early in his career. Either due to his nature, the language, or just the specific time period, or a combo of all 3 perhaps finding signed flats are tough. Do see the Montreal team signed balls around on occasion, one on the board right now, which may be because he could sign more privately( locker room dugout etc). But again from what I`ve heard he mostly kept his distance, studied his craft, and learned the ways/language of his new surroundings.

What does the larger item look like? Is it a program, yearbook, etc.?

Not the greatest picture of Clemente, but it's from the '71 World Series. The Series that the Orioles should have won...

Great photo Mark, thanks for posting.

Finally added this pendant to go along with the Commemorative coins I posted earlier in the thread. This one is in great condition.

These are all the ones authorized by Nixon in 1973 and I believe sold/distributed by he Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.

The more "common" one is the 3" version - there were 2000 made - 1950 numbered (on the side of the medal) and supposedly 50 unnumbered (I have never seen an unnumbered one).

Then there is the 1 3/4" Bronze - of which they made 1500 - not numbered

The toughest of them all is the one Doc posted - it is Gold plated bronze and came in a bezel. There were 500 produced.

Thanks for the info Howard. I knew the small coin and pendant (?) were tough, but didn’t know the production numbers. I have only seen a handful of the pendants.

Recent pickup of a photo with Roberto wearing jersey # 19. When I received The photo, I knew I had seen photos of Roberto wearing this different jersey. After searching through this thread, in post # 268, Howard posted a couple of Temas magazines with Roberto wearing # 19.

In post # 304, Mike posted a very similar photo (2nd one down) with slight differences. I’m sure they were all taken the same day. The odd thing is, the sleeve piping has the reverse order of colors than other jerseys I have seen photos of. On the # 19 jersey, the color black is on the bottom, yellow at top. In all the other photos from this time frame that I have seen, black is at the top and yellow at the bottom. Just thought that was weird.

ca. 1971-72 Photo w/ # 19 jersey...

Nice photo! It was shot in Puerto Rico. The same photo shoot was used to make the the Rawlings Advisory Staff Glove photos. It was also used on an album cover. I was watching a similiar Jersey in ebay a couple of months ago. The seller attributed it to Al Oliver. He pulled it after I inquired about the sleeve and neck striping.

I'm new to this thread. Lots of things I've never seen before, so it's very impressive. Wanting to contribute something, this is a ball that I grabbed when I was 9 at Forbes Field in 1968. I passed the ball around to players in the BP for signatures, and somebody with the team volunteered to take it to the clubhouse for more autos. After the game, the sweetspot was still empty, so I was able to get Roberto to sign there. I remember being very happy about it!

Hi Mark,

Great signed baseball!

I think we all would have been very happy receiving that ball. For sure a keeper! Must have been quite the feeling seeing Roberto on the sweet spot.

Keep on posting!!!

Default Look at this "1960's Canada Dry Poster"

https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/1...umbnail-071515

Look closely at it. At the bottom of the picture of one of the cans you will see the "Nutrasweet" logo...... which wasn't introduced till 1985.

I see this advertised all the time as a 1960's poster when in fact it is from the 80's. 1987 I think.

I think I’ve seen it sold before as a 1980s piece. I think that’s why I never felt a strong need to add it to the collection.

This little figurine took me a while to obtain. Not sure why it’s difficult to find, have only seen a few offered in the last few years. Babe Ruth and Willie Mays from the same series are readily available. They were sold boxed in pairs of two, not sure if you could purchase individual figures, and for as small as it is it has some heft.

1996 Longton Crown pewter figure...

Cool story, thanks for sharing Mike. I don’t even go to ESPN’s website anymore with no sports and all.

While on lockdown, I've been sorting/organizing/beginning to sell thousands of cards I've collected over the years.

I found this in a stack. As I recall, I got it a used bookstore years ago.

1973 SABR volume 2 - Tribute to Clemente.

That’s a good one David. I’ll have to add that to the collection one day.

How about a Lou Brock thread bump. I’m sure you’ve added some new items.

Default updated Catalog in posts #911-->

So, I just updated the catalog for the thread with the last year or so of additions. Less often than I had hoped, but lucky I guess that's what global pandemic lockdowns are for, right?

Anyway, there were 45 or so distinct additions, bringing the total to around ~720 (it's always necessary to presume I miscounted something along the way), as well as a dozen or so additional cross-references and improvements gleaned from new information/connections. Well done.

But what's most interesting is how eclectic the posts continue to be, as there were multiple additions to all 10 of the primary item categories and also most of the subcategories, including obscure groupings like statues/figurines, foreign language publications, and even music/film!

Since I am not as cultured apparently as some of the rest of you though, my next addition in the next post will be somewhat more mundane...
