May not be super crazy, but I've finally got an Hank Aaron autograph! Can't wait to frame it! Picked it up in a auction for $60 total, and it comes with a JSA certificate!

It was nice to find myself at a card show today, but since I couldn't locate anything I seriously wanted (at a reasonable enough price), I decided it was wise to journey down the 'trade bait boulevard' instead.

Obviously bowing to his rookie card, the 1969 Topps #533 Nolan Ryan must be his second most sought after card, as it is highly cherished by the masses. This one has got a decent piece of that nice-centering stuff...

1969ryan533SGC6frontsm.jpg

The 1961 Topps #388 Roberto Clemente is newly graded, so 'only' being deemed a 5 with those sharp corners and incredibly clear focus is a terrible wrong, as it really looks sweet. Oh well! Was happy to get a more than decent deal on it, so grab it I did...

1961clemente388PSA5frontsm.jpg

Rounded the day off by negotiating for a real nice (and better centered than usual) 1973 Topps #174 Rich Gossage rookie card, and what would be an absolutely gorgeous card were it not for the centering, the cool 1967 Topps #26 Bob Priddy 'No Trade Statement' variation...

Nice Ryan. Mine (an SGC 4) possesses equally good centering, but has some pink print damage on the back, and some of the little print dots on his sleeves, which although not uncommon, is obviously not on all of them. The back damage (worse) doesn’t bother me; the front (most would consider minor) kinda does. Not sure why I’m built that way, but…

I digress. My favorite early Ryan card might be the ‘70 high number. Kind of a strange pose, but when the photo is clear it’s beautiful it’s a nice one - and Nolan still looks like he’s about 13 years old.

I've already got Brett and Yount, so Ryan was a logical next step.

I'm not building the '75 Topps set. I'm really not. (I keep telling myself this...)

I usually hang out on the prewar side, but picked these up in partial trade for time at my rental cabin in North GA. I’ve always wanted these two!

Thanks,
Bob

There was a sweepstakes that was offered in 1971. These are the winners of that sweepstakes. I never knew about any of this during 71 when I collected that set. It was only here, decades later, that I learned of them.

Cheers,

Butch

Do you happen to know if it was a wrapper offer or otherwise associated with any of the 1971 products sold in stores? I am compiling as much information I can about that sort of thing and would love to know how these were offered.

From what I recall here, it was a form that the store selling the topps cards provided the kids buying the cards. They filled it out and sent it in. I get sketchy about the details real fast after that. Sorry.

There is a thread here on these.

Found it.

This was also around the time I found out the Bowie Kuhn had a card too that was produced in 69 I believe.

Took me ages to finally get pics of these and load them onto a photo hosting site. Please excuse the lighting glare in some pics.

I picked these up near the 1st of the year, or a few months prior, but I *DID* just get some back from SGC.
The Mantle/Aaron batting foes is very clean with great color and no snow which is often a problem on this one.

The Hank Aaron Home Run King AUTO was a bit of a grail card for me.
I watched Ebay for several years until the right centered one came up.

This was the 3rd card I received in trade I made over the weekend. Unsure about it as I’d rather have a 1953-54 Bowman or 1955 Topps Snider. Nonetheless I’m happy to have pickups finally..

That looks like a great copy, and maybe even under graded?
One of my favorite cards and one of my 1st grabs when I joined this site back in 2016.
Congrats on it and the others.

Default April Pick Ups

As if in subconcious reply to my response to Jolly earlier, my LCS had this raw copy of the sophomore Nolan issue, sans pink PD at least on the sleeves for a reasonable price, so I picked it up. No creases, though the corners fell out of minty sharpness long ago - but that’s not what I’m going for in any case. Along with my SGC 4, this copy - maybe VG? with nicer print quality makes a welcome addition to my base Ryan run.
