Someone in charge of a price guide probably mistook a 1974 or 1975 Davenport for a 1973 years ago and it stuck. It is impossible for there to be a 1973 Jim Davenport, he was the Manager of the Triple A Phoenix Giants for all of 1973 before becoming a Padres coach in 1974.

Thanks for the info. I'll stop looking.

Good example of the blind faith we place in checklists and price guides sometimes. There were a few Garvey items on the master Beckett checklist that I finally gave up on and assumed do not exist.

I have all the Dean’s Photo Service Padres sets. I don’t believe the Davenport exists either. The 1973 set is on a thicker paper stock with lines in the paper, somewhat like linen. I have never seen a Davenport with that type of paper.

Speaking as a cataloguer, we would get or see checklists and usually take it as a leap of faith the information was correct. If we found out something different we would remove those cards from the list.

However, every once in a while we would leave in a card which we knew did not exist. The reason, if someone copied your checklist, you could go to court and properly claim plagarism. So there is that as well.

You lost me on that last part Rich. Intentional hobby misinformation to prevent plagiarism ?

Chris Benjamin would put a fake entry in some checklists in his Sport-Americana Non-Sports Guides to catch plagiarists. Card Prices Update got caught nicking Beckett's lists in the 1980's and got caught due to, I believe (it was a long time ago), the same typos being used. Bert Sugar made up his own ACC numbers sometimes in the Sports Collectors Bible. Even the ACC changed numbers from one edition to the next sometimes. And that's just the overt stuff I can recall. Mistakes happen, especially as making up lists can be a repetitive, rote and boring task but intentional errors really grind my gears.
