Here's a prime example of what happens when two bidders both want the same card. The seller is 100% legit and the card, even though it looks nice, does appear to have a good crease across the player's arms. In my opinion this is a lot to pay for a 1911 Obak, so I hope the winning bidder really needs it.

All 1911 Obaks are red print...this is just two bidders paying way too much for a common obak.

1911 are not as common as the 1910 175's, but they certainly aren't as difficult as 1909's & 1910 150's. The 2004 Standard Catalogs lists 1910's in VG at $20.00 and 1911's at 22.50. To my knowledge, the only 1911's that are known to carry a premium over the other cards in the set are Peckinpaugh, Million and Weaver. Unless you absolutely have to have it, $100+ is too much for a 1911 Cooney in this condition. Just my opinion.

Hey, we all do it. I've got a snipe bid set to go right now at ten times the price of a particularly tough "common" I need to finish a set. When it comes to a lot of smaller, older and/or regional sets, the price guides are simply not accurate. You grab what you can find and bear the price.

Phil Cooney is a former major leaguer who also happens to be Jewish. In addition to being part of the (relatively common) 1911 Obak set, his card would appeal to NY Yankees collectors (One of the most actively collected major league teams) as well as to several thousand collectors who document and save Jewish athletes. Fortunately, only a few dozen people are currently pursuing minor league cards of Jewish players, keeping the realized price ($129) relatively modest. While it may appear high to some of you, I'd be happy to purchase up to a dozen at $100 per (same grade/eye appeal as this one)

We've hit on a sore subject with me. For the last 25 or so years Price Guides have been a real thorn in my side. It's always - "This card books for this or this card books for that". It's only a "guide" that more often than not is way off. It is completely my choice to set any asking price or to pay whatever price I deem. I believe that "Price Guides" were much more useful in the days prior to toilet paper.

As an example. The SMR has t205 minor leaguers at $100 each at grade 4 (second-hand info please correct me if I'm wrong as I do not subscribe). I'd buy every one I could get my hands on for $100 at a grade 4 (SGC 50). Especially the Collins (HOFer). I use the 205 minors as an example as they are my primary area of collecting, but there are many more examples.

I personally believe some of the bidders missed the crease--at first glance this looks like an ex-mt card, because the glare on the card is right on the crease. My theory is that a bunch of collectors of Jewish players just weren't as observant as they should have been. It certainly is a nice looking card without the crease.

He is also in the 1910 Obak set although I personally found the 1911 Cooney much, much easier to find when completing my set than the 1910 Cooney which was very tough. Who knows why this card went so high? I've noticed Obaks starting to make a move upward lately on ebay. Hopefully it might bring some 1909s out of the closet and on to ebay for sale.

tbob, you Obak collectors may differentiate between years of issue, but to most of us, an Obak is an Obak. Sort of like the Diamond Stars. I know how to tell the years from the backs, but I personally don't care and most other people don't either. They still consider the cards to be part of the same set regardless of year of issue. Thanks for giving me hope for a brief moment that Cooney was in another set.
