I just picked up this great original photo of Johnny Vander Meer warming up prior to pitching in the 1944 Army vs. Navy Pacific World Series. The backdrop of literally thousands of active duty military personnel in the background and barracks buildings makes for an interesting visual, IMHO.
This photo came directly from the Johnny Vander Meer family estate.

The Navy crushed the Navy in a 9 game series that was played in the Hawaiian islands during late September through October 1944 and was the brainchild of Admiral Nimitz who thought this would be a great way to entertain troops and keep moral up. In total, the Navy won 6 (2 wins by Vandy and 3 by Virgil Trucks), the Army won 2, and one game ended in a tie.

This photo is a perfect compliment to several other items that I have related to Vander Meer's hitch in the Navy in WWII.

PS NOTE: Upon receiving the photo today 3/8 I noticed that the photo had an inscription on the back that say's "Navy Hickam Field, Honol. Haw". This photo was taken prior to Vandy's 1st win on 9/23, 1944 (Game 2 of the Army Navy Pacific Word Series). Cool!

Here are two other Vander Meer related to the 1944 Pacific Army Navy World Series. The first is a dated ticket stub to the second game in the series. Vandy was the winning pitcher, defeating the Army 5-2. The other item is an original scorecard to Vander Meer's 2nd and final win in the series, allowing the Navy to take a 5-0 start to begin what ended up being a lopsided trouncing.[/QUOTE]

Default Stan Musial and wife Lilian's 1999 Member HOF Induction Badges- Ryan, Brett, Yount

I'm happy to add HOF Stan Musial and his wife Lilian's original Member (and Member family) badges to the 1999 Induction ceremony to my advanced Nolan Ryan collection.

For those of you that don't remember, 1999 was perhaps one of the most popular of all HOF Induction classes. HOF greats Nolan Ryan, George Brett, Robin Yount and Orlando Cepeda all entered Cooperstown in 1999.

Stan Musial has always been an especially interesting HOF player to me. Not only was he one of the greatest hitters of all time, he (and also Ken Griffey Jr.) were also born on my birthday. Gotta love it!

Cool pickups Scott. Were you born in Donora Pennsylvania as well? What are the odds of two players of that caliber sharing a birthday and birthplace?

Mike,

Thanks!
I'm afraid that the birthday coincidence ends there.
I've actually often thought that it is amazing that two terrific HOF players shared the same birthdate.

Picked up this D&M stickpin. Not sure why (other than I liked it) as I don't really collect pins.

Default Photo of Gehrig signing autograph

+1 Love that photo, Mark. Thanks so much for showing us.

And I also agree about photos of players signing for kids. There was a nice Babe Ruth one on ebay recently. I think some N54'er got it.

What is especially great about this photo, to me, is the date and information it provides. The day before the club announced Gehrig's fateful diagnosis. I'm sure Lou already knew it, it just hadn't been announced to the public. You can see the concern on his face. Most Gehrig photos show his great smile, but not on this day. So much on his mind, yet here he was still signing for the kids when no one could have blamed him for sitting quietly in the clubhouse.

I agree! I bet he was thinking in his head that his days were numbered and would miss times like that when people adored him

Thanks guys for all the kind words.
I agree with everyone. My favorite Gehrig photos are the ones of him with kids . I was a little torn about buying it because it shows such a somber look on his face and I usually gravitate towards the photos of him smiling.

Not to diminish your sentiment, but the retirement announcement was made on June 21. The way the statement reads it is referring to this being the day after the announcement.

My bad Kevin. Thanks for correcting me in a kind way.
In my quick read, I mistook the period after "June 22" for a comma. Even so, that's something I probably should have known.

Max Kase (American writer and editor) had many successes during his tenure as sports editor of the Journal-American. In 1941, Kase founded the Hearst sandlot baseball program. In 1947, he organized an annual all-star game featuring the best players selected from local all-star games in cities with Hearst newspapers. The national all-star game was played at the Polo Grounds in New York and was called the Hearst Sandlot Classic. Kase solicited Babe Ruth to serve as chairman of the event. The Hearst sandlot program ultimately produced 50 Major League Baseball players, including all-stars Whitey Ford, Al Kaline, Joe Torre, Tony Kubek, Bill Freehan, Mike Marshall, and Bill Skowron > from Wikipedia

Here is an example of a mid '50's jersey and jacket from a Hearst AS Game.
