Picked this up recently.

In bronze. Measures about 5" x 8" [12.5 cm x 20 cm]. It says "Made In Paris 1909 Fraisse"

Édouard Fraisse is known mainly for his compositions inspired by sport. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts; he also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. Fraisse studied under Barrias, Coutan, Chalpain and Vernon. He collaborated with Henry Demey on numerous medals and plaquettes that typically depicted figures and especially sports figures in action. They were considered to be some of the best and most prestigious plaque and medal makers in France during the 1920s and 30s. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1929.

I wondered why Willie Lewis. Turns out that he moved to Paris in 1909 and fought there several times over the next few years. In early 1910, Lewis made an unsuccessful bid at the world middleweight title losing to Billy Papke and made two unsuccessful attempts at the world welterweight title, controversially drawing against World welterweight Champion Harry Lewis (no relation) twice in Paris.

Such a cool piece, Adam. I am kind of surprised the artist did not go with Sam McVey. BoxRec shows him fighting over a dozen times in France in 1908 and 1909, usually in Paris itself. McVey was the "idol of Paris." That nickname is even on his gravestone.

Oh wait. In bronze, wow! I thought it was plastic made to look bronze. That's really unusual Adam.

Fraisse did a sculpture called the boxer which I think looks a heck of a lot like Mcvey.

Every once in a while I get the urge to pick up another vintage boxing card. Once I saw these C. 1908 Birmingham Smallwares Jack Johnson postcards, I had to have them! Images are incredible. Just arrived today. Anyone have more info on these? I'm assuming these are some of the earliest Jack Johnson cards/ collectibles? I have a 1909 Ogdens "RC" already. Also picked up my first period John Sullivan piece (CDV) and the 1909 Jeffries/Johnson/McVey playing card, another Rookie era piece. These smallwares are now my favorite boxing pieces now of my relatively small boxing collection. The one of Jack Johnson in the suit and top hat may be my favorite of the bunch!

Any idea if PSA grades/slabs these? I don't think they have yet but not sure if they will? I think I'll probably have slabbed by SGC at some point, they all have some glue residue on the backs anyway except the one already graded 2.5.

Yeah, those are fantastic.

Even that Johnson/McVey card, which isn't that rare, but is probably my favorite boxing card of all time.

Great stuff!

The set is likely a 1908-1909 mix since it has a post-fight image and the fight was 12/26/08. I doubt they'd have sold the card for only a week.

I don't know if PSA would grade them but I think SGC would. We (all) really need to try and get PSA grading more boxing stuff. If I wasn't so busy at work and trying to get the next edition of my book done before the National, I would try to press them to up their game, for purely selfish reasons: I have a ton of cards of HOFers that they would need to grade so I could register a HOF set. There are lots of HOFers w/o cards that PSA grades.

Thanks Adam,

Great info! Do you have an image of the post fight one? Any idea of total number of cards in the set? Can't seem to find much info on them.

I'm thrilled to say I just met a local collector/ dealer today and did a deal for 2 more of these that I did not yet have!

Noticed another interesting thing. They are slightly different sizes, neither trimmed. The smaller one is on slightly darker/creamier card-stock and has a different PC back (KODAK AUSTRAL Stamp box). That's the #9 "Ready for a left hook". The smaller one also has a slightly smaller, more compact photo area inside the white border. This Kodak #9 is also the same image as image as the #11 I had with different caption.

The #5 "Ready to deliver left uppercut" I got is like the rest I already have on brighter card stock and the same size as others.

I'm assuming that likely all cards from the set were presumably issued with both PC backs. Seems like the KODAK ones originate from Australia, in promotion of the fight, while others from UK I believe? Ever seen any other PC backs?

That Gibbons card is a prize. I was an underbidder but I had too much invested in other things.

Here's something I'd been after a for a while, a genuine JCC signed card:

His sig is basically chicken scratch and not that easy so I'd been reluctant to buy one but now with the UD issue I can finally add a good one.

I'm glad the card cos are doing autographs of some additional modern fighters in almost every issue. I've picked up HOFer and future HOFers Tyson, Hearns, Jones, Holyfield, Calzaghe, Holmes, GGG, Canelo, Pacquiao, Marquez, Ward, and now Chavez. I would definitely like to see them add some others: for me it is a perfect way to expand my HOF collection.

I am super excited to get this one:

As a refresher for those who might not know the history, Les Darcy is a HOFer with virtually no career issued cards. He died suddenly of a bacterial infection in early 1917 at age 21 but, like Mexican great Salvador Sanchez (killed in a car wreck at age 22), Darcy was so talented that he'd already secured a legacy worthy of a HOF induction. Since his career started in 1910 and spanned only a bit over six years, the cards that do exist (1922 Davies & Herbert, 1920s Romeo y Julieta, 1932 Sweetacres, 1933 BDV Tobacco) are post-career cards, which leaves this 1915 fight promo card as his only career contemporary card. Since that is what I aim to have for every HOFer, it has been on my 'buy if you see it' list for years.

Default EL REY Cien Boxeadores

Here's an EL RAY Cien Boxeadores card of Tommy Burns. It uses the 1921 Exhibit image and has a back that says it's made in Caracas. There was also a Jimmy Clabby that I assume one of y'all outbid me on. The Clabby also appeared to have the same image as his exhibit. Clabby does not have a lot of cards, so that was a nice grab. It's a little shorter than a T206. Any news on these? Are they in the Boxing Card Bible?

The El Rey cards are an entirely new discovery from Venezuela. Here's Clabby:

the two appear to be from different series; this one looks like it is from a boxing rules (Reglas De Boxeo) series. Gonna be fun to see what else is in store for us from Venezuela.

I don't think 'Cien' is a series; it appears to be an advert offering the purchase of 100 cards for 1.50 Bolivars, same as the ad on the back of the Clabby.

I just realized when you pointed it out that the backs are different. The Burns is not numbered. I was using my limited Spanish thinking that "cien" meant 100 to the set. Would you guess these are from the late 1920's or maybe later? Rob

Judging from the subject, look and the paper it is 1920s.

I looked at the card under a microscope. The front is photoengraved. That is consistent with other cards of the era from Venezuela. It reminds me a lot of the 1931 Doble Aguilas but that might be a bit later because of the fighters. Clabby was active until 1923; the image is from the 1921 Exhibit card. The Burns is also from the 1921 Exhibit set, so that would be consistent. If more of them show up we might learn more.

Sometimes, the backs are nicer than the fronts. Thanks to DaveW, 5 very tough steps closer to the Master Set.

And to be perfectly on topic instead of non-boxers-from-what-is-primarily-known-as-a-boxing set, here is a boxer-from-what-is-primarily-known-as-a-baseball-set. Turkey Reds must be the most aesthetically pleasing boxing cards printed yet. Not rare at all, but some of my favorites to pick up

Beautiful, my friend! I strongly regret not picking up a T227 Johnson a few years ago, before this set took off a bit. The artwork is better than any non-Turkey Red T cards

Interesting. I've seen the one with just the two kids, but never with the fella in the middle. Do we know who that is?

Best research is it is HOFer Paddy (not Patsey) Duffy. Note that Wikipedia and Cyberboxing Zone both show Patsey Duffy's N29 image.

From a very kind board member for my e79 set. The Gans/Nelson is a personal favorite, referencing their classic 42 round 1906 battle

C'mon guys, we can't let the wrestling people dominate; let's see some boxing.

Did anyone get any of the Jean Donat Dupont Indiana-Sport-Avion cards the other night? I got one, with my last snipe:

For those who don't know, it is a brutally tough French set from around 1936 that includes a bunch of boxers as well as baseball, hockey, football and other sports. Also aviators and planes in this series. Anyhow, they seldom are offered for sale and I needed an Avion variation for my type card set.

Very pleased to add another mag with my cousin on the cover:

Default Scrappers

My wife dragged me to an antique mall. She found a table she wanted. I found these sitting in the corner of one of the display cases. I may go with her more often.

How'd we get to that determination? I'd like to include it in the 11th edition.

Adam....I have a 11X14 J Wood cabinet with the same pose. It is him, you must have other photos of McCarthy as he was well known. John

My scanner is down, but I can send you a photocopy, but will probably have to reduce the size. Let me know and send your address if you want a copy. John

Yeah, I stared at it for a couple of weeks before I finally decided to pull the trigger on it but in the end it checked all the boxes for me. Talk about coincidences, a few days earlier I got this:
